Sabbath Work in Emergencies

Recommended Posts

Posted

I don't routinely work on Saturdays, at all. However, I work for a company that deals with numerous dangerous chemicals, such as sulphuric acid, sodium hydroxide, chromic acid, hydrogen peroxide (industrial), nitric acid and many others.

I'm on call in case of emergency. We have a number of alarms that could go off if certain things happen (e.g. tank leak, something over temperature, pump failure). If I don't attend to the call, it is possible material could leak to the environment and do considerable environmental damage.

Would it be considered wrong for me to respond to this call on the Sabbath? I get paid extra for responding to a call, if that makes a difference.

Sounds like an ox to me. But that is for each person to decide individually.

Yes, I also agree this is an "ox in the ditch" sort of thing. Preventing greater harm in an emergency situation is a good thing. Jesus said doing good on the Sabbath is the right thing to do.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

(And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

My goodness, norfoith- I would think it your duty if it was to avert disaster and save lives! I would also consider it like pulling the distressed ox that fell into the ditch.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Sounds like we're batting a thousand here. All seem to be in agreement which is hard to accomplish in Adventist circles and especially here on this forum. So, I would say that we are rather confident in this matter.

I'm in agreement with all, norfoith. As far as the money, well that's up to you. I knew someone once that was mentioning something similiar, what they did they said was give the money to a specific church work or even a charity. I know of one plumber, that he would go to the poorer area's in town and fix people's plumbing and not charge any money, etc.

And if the wages you get for the time spent bothers you, you could give the earnings to God in some way clearly seen that you recognized His claim to what and how you prospered materially in those hours. My understanding is that many Seventh Day Adventist medical workers follow that policy. Sounds like a win win situation to me.

“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’Matthew 25:40 NLT

P.S. Sometimes I join in late so if I seem to be repeating others, just give credit to the same Spirit counseling.

God blesses! peace

LHC this is good advice. As Woody said, it appears tha we are all in agreement; and that is a good thing!

I wasn't an Adventist but I had a similiar responsibility for many years. I've looked back on it and wondered what I would have done as an Adventist. No doubt about it, I would have served without hesitation.

...I actually have gotten that "3 am call" to respond to a potential leak of dangerous gas. Life and health issues, ya gotta answer the call.
