wayfinder Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 We hear a lot about being "overcomers". What does it mean to be an "overcomer"? "Overcome" what? Read the "To him who has an ear to hear" after each one of the seven messages to the seven assemblies in Revelation 2 and 3. Pay particular attention to this one. Rvelation 3:21 NIV To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. To him who overcomes... as I overcame... It is clear from this statement that Jesus did not overcome for us, He over came so we could overcome. By overcoming as He overcame, we are given the right to sit on the throne of God alongside our Brother and King. You ask, what did the Son of God overcome? Matthew 7:21 NIV "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 12:50 NIV For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." John 8:28 NIV So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. John 16:33 NIV "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." WE must overcome the world! Quote
Members phkrause Posted February 5, 2012 Members Posted February 5, 2012 Not sure what your looking for or trying to see who will bite! Anyway, do you have the "Harper Study Bible?" Its the RSV. Anyway in the Concordance section, under "overcome/s, there are 5 texts: 1-John 16:33 I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." 2-Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. 3-1 John 4:4 Little children, you are of God, and have overcome them; for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 4-Luke 11:22 but when one stronger than he assails him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoil. 5-1 John5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. Here's my favorite Bible's passage's for those same verses, CJB 1-John 16:33 "I have said these things to you so that, united with me, you may have shalom. In the world, you have tsuris. But be brave! I have conquered the world!" 2-Romans 12:21 Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good. 3-1 John 4:4 You, children, are from God and have overcome the false prophets, because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 4-Luke 11:22 But when someone stronger attacks and defeats him, he carries off all the armor and weaponry on which the man was depending, and divides up the spoils. 5-1 John5:4 because everything which has God as its Father overcomes the world. And this is what victoriously overcomes the world: our trust Again not sure what your actually looking for, but this is what the Bible talks about overcoming. wayfinder Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Sin is choosing to live outside of the will of God. Sin is disobeying the revealed will of God. Adam and Eve sinned when they disobeyed the will/command of God. We overcome by demonstration of our compliance/obedience to the will/commands of God. Quote

Members phkrause Posted February 5, 2012 Members Posted February 5, 2012 So than in reality your not even answering or referring to what miz3 is asking??? Yes I agree the world has a very restrictive view of sin. Not sure that I've seen that on this forum. Most seem to have a good idea of what sin is. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Okay pk. I have to disagree. Some here feel that sin is just a transgression of the law. That is what I am hinting about. They are totally focused on the law. That is what a legalist does. But sin is MUCH more. Sin is anything that keeps us away from God. Sure the law is part of that. But just a small part. Legalists have narrowed themselves down SO much that they miss the larger pictures. Just look at what the Jews did. For sure - we still have that type among us. Gibs Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 What on earth is sin? Well there is many verses to clear that up, here is one. 1Jo 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. The law is there for that purpose, Ro 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. Sinners we are and Christ within is the only answer and born anew in Him. 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. miz3 Posted February 5, 2012 Author Posted February 5, 2012 So far I see two views of what sin is. 1. Transgression of the Law. [Overcomers would be those who keep perfectly the Law without any flaws of any kind]. 2. What I will call "Woody's View". When we talk about "Law" what exactly are we talking about? When Uzzah touched the Ark did he break the Law? Please explain. Quote

When Uzzah touched the Ark did he break the Law? Please explain. exodus 30:24 500 shekels of cassia--all according to the sanctuary shekel--and a hin of olive oil. 25 Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil.26 Then use it to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony, 27 the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, 28 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand. 29 You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy.30 "Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests.31 Say to the Israelites, 'This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come.32 Do not pour it on men's bodies and do not make any oil with the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred.33 Whoever makes perfume like it and whoever puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from his people.' " 2 Samuel 6:7 NIV The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God. Uzzah was not a priest, he was not annointed as most holy(sacred), he knew what God had commanded Moses and he touched the holy ark anyway. Because of Uzzah's death, David followed the command of God, as it concerned the transporting of the ark of the covenant. 1 Chronicles 15:2 NIV Then David said, "No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever." Just a thought, and not to by any means continue this thread, by definition #1 is there anyone, save Jesus Christ, who have kept the Law without any flaws of any kind? My Bible tells me, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" And, #2 what you call Woody's view Quote: .............But sin is MUCH more. Sin is anything that keeps us away from God. Sure the law is part of that. seems to present a broader more composit definition. Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God

ClubV12 Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 If we understood the depth of the law we would see the beauty in it more. The third commandment is not to take the Lords name in vain. Lately I've come to realize I could be guilty of breaking that commandment by causing other people to break it. By leaving that shopping cart in a bad location when I leave the parking lot. Somebody might come along and curse God because of that shopping cart being in their way! Or littering. Someone might come along and curse God because of a mess I made. Or even the dishes! If I don't do a good job, will someone come along (a guest) and curse God in their heart because a glass is dirty they thought was clean? In all of the above scenarios I played a part, I was the indirect cause of someone cursing God. A legalist would say, "I never curse God", without considering the wider impact they have on others, on society. These are examples of keeping the spirit of LOVE within the law, a much broader application than a strict interpretation. The Jewish nation was all about strict interpretation as to the exact meaning of the law. THAT is "legalism"! Thats why keeping the law must come from the heart, to see and understand the bigger picture of what it means to keep the law. Quote
Woody Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 eewwwwww - U litter? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
ClubV12 Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Does a gum wrapper count? Being as I'm a "legalist", yes even a gum wrapper counts! A reformed litter, er... :) Quote
