Digitalization, Ideas and Issues

I've been thinking about how being online might have changed the ways in which we debate and even think about the issues.

“Our conclusion is that digitalization itself is creating an epidemic of fear, and that Epictetus had it right: we live in a world not of real things but of opinion and fantasy. The rise in market volatility, in our opinion, is a function of digitalization, which is exaggerating human mood swings by the unprecedented dissemination of information via the Internet.” - from Robert Harris' new novel 'The Fear Index'

There's a good review of the novel here: http://www.salon.com/2012/02/05/robert_harris_sci_fi_thriller_ripped_from_the_business_headlines/

But I was more interested in the quote above: it seems to me relevant to a lot of the discussions and debates around here. To what extent has 'digitalisation' changed our world in relation to the issues we're interested in here? (both political and religious)

What the heck....I will just go for it!!

One of the bigger issues with the new digital world....it has created laziness! Brain usage is way down and dropping. People no longer seek out the truth, they just go to the digital world, unhinge their skulls and pour it all in, accepting it as truth. Rational thinking, forget it! If it fits a preconceived idea, accept it! Illogical, even better! Everything and anything can be blogged, flogged, babbled, scrabbled and thrown up against the barn wall, without any confirmation as to reality or truthfulness. The masses suck it up, especially in the political and religious world. The masses are freely giving up the use of their brain power for visual power. If they can get their knowledge through the digital world, it is the truth.

The digital age is good and a great advance, but humans have become very lazy, using it instead of the most stupendous digital device everyone owns, a brain.

And that would be most everyone except me and thee, and sometimes I wonder about thee.

God blesses! peace

especially in the political and religious world.

I'm not totally in agreement with the Religious world but definitely the political for sure. We see that in the political forum.

CD or DVD=Digital information

Question.

Which is the most likely to quoted from, EGW from a topic search or from the Bible? thinking

I'd argue that it's *different* brain use rather than *reduced* brain use, and that we need to look at the good and bad features of that...

Here's a little something I wrote elsewhere on this article:

Quote:
I guess what I see is more polarisation due to more processing. A person who was vaguely, generally left- or right-wing before can, as Emir Jay noted, now vanish into an echo-chamber of like-minded talking points and never emerge again. I don't think that happened in a face-to-face sense to the same extent - except perhaps in small country one-church towns...

Not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, it's just a new thing and needs to be taken into account: new doesn't mean bad, it just means new.

If it makes you feel more comfortable you can add 'or major universities' (but it's not actually true).

Quote:
...it tends to exaggerate what was there all along - the nasty people congregate and get nastier, the smart people congregate and get smarter and so on...

I guess I would have to agree that probably EGW, but when she is quoted, a lot of her quotes are from the Bible. I do understand what your getting at. I still will say politics.
