On Day 1 the LORD said, in essence, "Turn on the lights so we can see what we're doing down here." The LORD, and company, then proceeded to modify the planet to enable it to support land-dwelling creatures. Because he is made of solid rock and spirit, not flesh and blood and DNA, when YHVH commanded something to happen, others, including his Spirit, performed the tasks. Perhaps the source of heat that prevented the worldwide ocean from freezing over the eons was internal. Perhaps the planet was transported from one place in the universe to another more suitable location during the creation week. That might explain the sudden appearance of the Earth and stars later described in the Bible. (2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Because the next few verses indicate that Light was the first thing created on day one. Here is how the CJB puts it: Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was unformed and void, darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the water. 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. Since my college days, I have been of the persuasion that God created this planet in some primordial form at some point in eons past, and that the events of Gen 1 & 2 are more recent. Quote

I second that persuasion. I don't know how anyone could, given the language of Genesis, reach any other conclusion, "and the world WAS..." I guess it happens though. Quote

The "was" in the text is more perspective that temporal. I'm not sure why they would apply the word creation to something that occurred before the first day of the week.The very creation account clearly indicates that there was both water and something solid here before God began to prepare the world for the life to come.It doesn't imply that He created these things moments before he said "Let there be light." If it was part of the creation week you'd think He would have been recorded as saying "Let there be water and land." Quote

It would be like God going to Mars or any of the planets in our solar system today and doing in it what He did during creation week. Quote

Gen.1:6-8 describes WHEN God created (the) "heaven" and Gen.1:9,10 describes WHEN God "created" the "earth".So apparantly there was no heaven or earth before that, but there was water and land in a non-descript form.So maybe we've been using the right words to describe the wrong thing?
