Woody Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Should we be praying for the Pope? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
miz3 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 We should pray that God's Will is done. We should pray also that God will cause us to support His Will. We ourselves are not smart enough to know what to pray for. I also find the "Lord's Prayer" a good model when rightly understood. Quote
Moderators Kevin H Posted February 18, 2012 Moderators Posted February 18, 2012 Of course we should. While as a system we have much to criticize, there are individual who hold the position who have been living up to the light they understand and can be used by God. Don't forget there was once a pope that died. The cardnels could not decide who to replace him, so to give themselves more time to decide they picked an interm pope, a popular man, but an old man dieing of cancer. A man too old and sick to do anything except hold the seat while the cardnels decided who to make as the next real pope. Well, this old dieing man was Pope John the XXIII, who instututed Vatican 2. Although as Protestants we know he did not go far enough, it was at least a start, got the reading of the Bible oked for good Catholics to do and many will be in heaven because the Holy Spirit was able to work through this man that everyone thought was too old and sick to do anything. The Vatican has been trying to back peddle from Vatican 2 ever since. Unfortunetely for the Vatican, in the 1800s the idea of Papal infalibility was implemented. Was it not for that the church simply could have called John XXIII a heretic (or maybe in a more softer terms) and dismantle Vatican 2. What I find sad with the current Pope is that he was Pope John's engeneer to form Vatican 2, playing a huge role in it's developement, however he has spent the rest of his life trying to undo what he created. I think he picked a wonderful name for himself. Now there is one of two things going on with him. First, for him to have been the engineer of the formation of Vatican 2, maybe those truths he originally fought for may have a hold of his heart and might take root and grow. In which case he most certanly needs our prayers. However with how he had dedicated his life to undoing what he made, he is rejecting truth and this rejection of truth may have hardened his heart. Gibs Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Jesus had this to say in His day among us and about the same types as the pope, Mt 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Mt 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Was Jesus praying for these, I doubt. I think I'll leave the situation there in Jesus hands as I'm sure He knows best. 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. I am very saddened to hear this. The Pope is a Christian just like any other. In fact - I think the Pope and I have more in common than you and I do. Jesus love all - yes even the Pope. He sets up those in power that He desires to set up. God is in control. And yes He does love the pope and wants us to pray for him. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. ClubV12 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Well this thread has certainly been a revelation of sorts, and a major conundrum. Wait,,, are you suggesting,,,, let me get this straight,,, I am to pray for the Pope? Pray WHAT? My first thought might be, that he has a heart attack.... OK, not a good prayer. So, pray WHAT? Whew,,, pray for your enemies? Treat others as would yourself? This is some seriously higher ground your making a call for, I'm going to need Jesus in my heart for sure, there is no other possible way to wrap my head around this. Quote
jasd Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 QR frame: Indeed, pray for health and long life for this Pope. It is prophesied that he will die this year and the next Pope will be the last - Petrus Romanus. By the reasoning of some, it must then be he who is to be the man of sin, the antichrist, the son of predition. Woe unto y'all!--should that be the proper parsing of text. In the meantime, it might do to read the signs of the times and note: that there are other factions who are making a grab for world domination and are farther along than the Vatican. Further, the Vatican seems, saliently, to be odd man out. Quote
doug yowell Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Indeed, pray for health and long life for this Pope. It is prophesied that he will die this year and the next Pope will be the last - Petrus Romanus. And by way of reminder I am taking bets on this prediction. I'm giving 10-1 odds that he's around more than this one year. All winnings will be donated to Amazing Facts Ministries. Quote
ClubV12 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I know of NO prophecy, I should say LEGITIMATE prophecy that says anything about who the last Pope will be or when he will serve. No man knows the day or the hour.... Quote

ClubV12 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Hmmmm,,, to close for comfort in that respect Woody. If you know who the last Pope is you could "start the count". Point is, there is no prophecy that is anywhere near that specific as it concerns the second coming. Quote

Windsor Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Hmmmm,,, to close for comfort in that respect Woody. If you know who the last Pope is you could "start the count". Point is, there is no prophecy that is anywhere near that specific as it concerns the second coming. Whilst obviously not a prophecy from the Bible, you must be familiar with the so-called "Prophecy of the Popes" written by Saint Malachy in 1139. His long list of popes goes from when it was written down to one more pope after the current pope. Of the current pope it was written "Glory of the Olive". The name Benedict came from St. Benedict who started the Benedictine order whose crest is an Olive Branch. Of the next pope it is written, "Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end." Quote Remember Adventists Online?
ClubV12 Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Thanks for that Windsor, while I attended a Jesuit School I did my best to ignore as much of the Catholic rhetoric as I could. I am not familiar with the "Prophecy of the Popes" and have no compelling interest to learn about them. :) Quote
Members phkrause Posted February 19, 2012 Members Posted February 19, 2012 Was Jesus praying for these, I doubt. I so disagree with this statement. So let me ask, Didn't Jesus even pray for those that were crucifying him? Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Wow Gibs, you are soooo good with words! Interestingly, the ONLY ones that Jesus prayed for in John 17 are the ONES who read and understand and abide by the words of the eyewitness disciples. No where do I see that Jesus prayed for anyone who reads the words of others, either dead or alive! Quote
ClubV12 Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Jesus most certainly prayed for those who were crucifying him, "Father forgive them..." Sister White expounds on that. She says it was a PRAYER that could not be answered. Now surely Jesus knew it could not be answered, they could not be forgiven, and yet, He prayed for them anyway! Such is the work of a mediator, no matter how hopeless the case is or may appear to be, he does not give up. Such is the case for a love I cannot begin to fathom. How amazing that kind of love is. He pleads on behalf of the guilty to His Father, and then He submits Himself to His Fathers will. Wow... Quote

dialoguewithus Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 1 Timothy 2, Concordant Literal Version: 1 I am entreating, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, pleadings, thanksgiving be made for all mankind, 2 for kings and all those being in a superior station, that we may be leading a mild and quiet life in all devoutness and gravity, 3 for this is ideal and welcome in the sight of our Saviour, God, 4 Who wills that all mankind be saved and come into a realization of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one Mediator of God and mankind, a Man, Christ Jesus, 6 Who is giving Himself a correspondent Ransom for all (the testimony in its own eras) Quote
Dr. Rich Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 And the writer of 2Tim also wrote in Romans that all of Israel will be saved too. He also said that all of the leaders in the world have been chosen by God, which shows how mistaken he really was. Jesus said that the ruler of this world RIGHT NOW is Satan. It's a no brainer that God would LOVE to have everyone repent and obey Him, but prophecy shows us that sadly it will not happen. Quote
