Woody Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 Not many social hugs I've been around have lasted 20 seconds. I must live in the wrong place. Could be. Woody Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 I'm cautious with my hugs, particularly with single women, which I avoid like the plague.... Neil D Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Pfft. I look capable of giving great hugs: I'm a big bear of a guy with a kind face. Our Stan, very much likewise. It ain't sexist to say so. For a woman to say that some guy "is capable" of hugging sounds .....sexist...[said with tongue firmly planted in the cheek]...It sounds strange for a woman to say that a guy is capable of hugging...OF COURSE, a guy is capable of hugging...ALL men are capable of hugging...It's as if Redwood said that a pretty woman is capable of kissing... I am not devaluing the hugs...I am not saying that they are inappropriate....What I am saying is that for a woman to say that a man "is capable" sounds wrong....and sounds somewhat sexist ...possibly...maybe...but definately wrong... ok, I'll be quiet now...... Um, I'm not sure what you mean by that phrase....It sounds a bit like what we call "groping"....which we, in the western US concider to be inappropriate.... ....I'm just sayin' Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. Neil D Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 For me, a married person, hugging people of the opposite sex is "wrong." Others may have a different opinion. The New Testament commands greeting people with "a holy kiss"...Now, specifically, there are 4 texts that say greet the "brethern" with a holy kiss and greet "one another" with a holy kiss.... Cricket, with all due respect, you are missing out on trusting people...If you can not trust them with a hug, how can you trust with a "holy kiss"? Moderators John317 Posted February 26, 2012 Moderators Posted February 26, 2012 No, it isn't wrong to hug, but whether people hug or kiss or shake hands when they meet depends on culture. The Russians hug and kiss (kind of), and the Germans and the French always shake hands even if they just saw the person a couple of hours before. Some people aren't the hugging kind, though, and they shouldn't be made to feel that there's something wrong with them if they're not doing it. Is there anyone who feels offended if they don't get a hug? Personally I'm fine with a handshake or even a simple wave of the hand and a smile or whatever. On the other hand, I can appreciate a hug now and then, too. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators Bravus Posted February 26, 2012 Moderators Posted February 26, 2012 Exactly! Great summary. I try to read the other person's body language, and give them what is comfortable (and/or comforting) for them, rather than what works for me. Quote Truth is important

That's what I mean when I say these things depend to a great extent on culture, because if Paul had been writing in North America, he would probably tell people to greet one another with an enthusiastic handshake rather than with a kiss. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. ClubV12 Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Woody, my intent is to avoid getting hooked! IF and WHEN the Lord wants me to consider marriage I will follow the principles of courtship and marriage that Sister White counsels us on. After having studied those principles it sounds so complicated I'd rather not get involved at all. I like Pauls OPINION on marriage as well, which a rough translation would read, "If you don't NEED to, why bother?" There are SO many single men and women in my local Church, some by choice, some not, I want to be a witness to them that it's OK to be single, happy AND complete in the Lord. Quote
Neil D Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I know that I have been puting uut post that have some really TIC posts. And I know that this question of when you hug is important....but what most people want is to be known and to know another...to be known is to give trust to another, it seems to me...and to trust another, one needs to be intimate.. ...So, Let me open this question a bit futher...How much intimacy does one want to know/reveal? How much trusting can a person allow before that intimacy breaks down ones personal/Godly values? Do we find that too much intimacy [or knowing another] can cause others to break down thier own personal values ]Law| and ruin relationships? Members phkrause Posted February 26, 2012 Members Posted February 26, 2012 There is a friend at the AUC church that would not shake anyone's hand let alone hug you. He was afraid of getting germs. cricket Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 There are also those who use hand lotions and perfumes that cause allergic reactions for others. Refusal of hugs and hand shakes without seeming rude is difficult for those people. Quote
ClubV12 Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 We have a guy like that in my Church. In some respects, he might be onto something. A "cold" recently SWEPT through the congregation, pretty much everyone I knew got it. I'm pretty sure I got from the Assisstant Pastor! What a delima! How can you refuse to shake the hand of the Pastor? How can you NOT refuse when you know THAT hand has shaken a lot of folks, with a cold... :) Quote
Administrators Naomi Posted February 26, 2012 Administrators Posted February 26, 2012 To Hug or Not To Hug??? I suppose it depends on your background, your intentions and taking time to evaluate someone that you do not know. I grew up in an environment in which hugs and a kiss on one or both cheeks was an acceptable greeting. Never gave it a thought that would be considered inappropriate. In church and other public places the 'half' hugs dgrimm mentioned certainly seem acceptable and nothing that I would consider as an act of flirtation. A full-body 'bear hug' would not feel appropriate. I might add that for sanitation reasons, a handshake is less sanitary than a side-ways half-hug. just sain........... Our Pastor doesn't like any personal contact. His body language says it all. That is fine, and I don't know of anyone who has approached him with a hug of any kind. However, I have seen some people who have stood in front of him with their hand out until he has to shake hands. (I have to smile to myself) Everyone, men and women, have had a bad experience with a member of the opposite sex in one way or another. It happens ... but not everyone has ulterior motives. Workplace laws are so strict that if you pat someone on the shoulder it can be considered 'sexual harassment' The affairs that I have been aware of in church, the work place, or other social outlets were not by people who openly hugged in public ... or even spent much time talking. Wonder why? Interesting world we live in! there have been studies about babies and their development with and without hugs/human contact. Also concerning adults ... I shall not go into them but the poor simple hug has got a bad rap. Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God

Administrators Gail Posted February 26, 2012 Administrators Posted February 26, 2012 I remember Darlene used to have a special hug time at the Singles retreats... and how much some of the attendees enjoyed that! Some folk might not EVER get even one hug all year long. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Naomi Posted February 26, 2012 Administrators Posted February 26, 2012 Quote: Some churches have hug times ... and it is nice. Those who do not want to be touched just keep their seats. I have a sweet little old man who comes into the office every few days (his wife died last year someplace near 90) he'll stand there until I have time to acknowledge him and grin and say, "Can I have my hug?" When I was Director of the Senior Citizens we always had hug time and the majority seemed to really light up ... Some folk might not EVER get even one hug all year long. That's really sad, and I would think would turn a person into a very negative anti-social person. Hugs are good Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
