I'd say its bad and this statement:

Tell us what you think! Is this practice legal and if asked, would you give out your login information to employers in order to get a job?

I have no idea if it is or not, and I'm not sure if I would or wouldn't!

I have been told that they ask for your log-in information for several reasons. They are looking for how much time you spend on the computer. If some of that time would have been during normal work hours.

They also look for social and moral post to see what your character is. And, too many religious post and articles would be a possible reason to think you are a zealot.

Anything we put out there stays and eventually someone will read it.

Would I give it out? Probably, depending on how much I needed or wanted the position ... and after I cleaned up my fb time-line so they at least have to work to get their desired info. :)

Yeah we had guys that worked nights and spent hours on the computer. I remember one morning coming in to work and the first job was on the PC, and when I touched the mouse the screen saver disappeared and there was this porn site on the monitor!!! What a shock that was. So if the reason for there wanting to know the info your mentioning, well I can see why and I would than agree with them.

I wouldn't be too worried... partly because I don't post anything I'm ashamed of... (or, if I ever do, withdraw it and apologise promptly)... and partly because my research work is related to web-based learning including social media, so if I spend time on it it sorta almost a bit counts as working... bwink

On the other hand, I'm not especially in favour of a surveillance society, particularly on the part of corporations with no checks and balances. And also, what if you don't get the job? They can't really 'unknow' your password, though I guess you could change it...

Actually you don't have to give them your password, you can always log yourself in, then they don't have your login info. I don't really see a problem in giving them access to your page, I mean, it's the internet, nothing on the internet is private, and if you think it's private you're wrong--sorry. Get a journal if you want private stuff to be private, don't put it on the internet, especially not a social networking site.

I personally think this is a valid way to do part of a background check, if one is applying for a job that requires background checks.

Trouble is - it could give them more info than Federal Law allows them to have such as your age etc.

If they are doing a background check on you, they will find out your age, and hopefully a lot of other stuff too. That is the point of a background check.

The problem isn't people like you. The problem is the fact that people are supposed to have freedoms in this country. Everybody thought it wasn't bad to outlaw smoking in certain establishments, but then it went downhill, as it always does. It is nobody's business what they post when they aren't at work. PERIOD!!!!

I respectfully disagree. If I am hiring someone to watch to my kidlets, and they put on a *PUBLIC FORUM* pictures of naked kids, then that is my business. I do think I have the right to look at your public self and decide if you are right for our business. I do *NOT* have the right to go into your house and search your private documents or your home computer. The internet is just as public as driving records, credit history and court records; the difference is, you are responsible for what you put out on the internet.

The funny thing is, if I were considering the employment of any of my friends based on what they post on Facebook and other sites like that, I wouldn't hire anyone.

I am curious to know, however, what would happen if someone wanted to be hired and they said they did not have a Facebook account. Would the hiring company believe them, or would they put them on a "no hire" list because it's obvious the candidate is hiding something.

Somehow I think the FB issue would only come up after the background, drug and credit bureau checks had been done. In todays world with Big Brother everywhere we should all be happy that we are not running for President. LOL

Oh, perhaps the voters should ask the candidates for their FB passwords ROFL

Very Funny Naomi. I like that idea.

What I don't understand - is why the employer needs a password. Wouldn't just letting them be friends - give them access to all that they would need?

I don't do FB or any of those idiot sites, never have and never will.

That's the kind of language usage I'm referring to when I say I wouldn't hire any of my friends based on what they post on Facebook.

You do realize that *this* site is in the same category. You were just being funny, right?

This is after all a FOX News report. I do recall seeing that one group they were targeting was DHS. If ever potential employees who should have fb or any other background checks investigated it would be DHS employees!!!

I don't believe she is! The reason I say that, is because I know others who would not have anything to do with FB. I personally believe that that is unfortunate. Because even though I agree FB can sometimes be annoying, it brings us back in time by getting us together with old friends from school, the old neighborhood, etc. My brother and his wife who are just a two who miss out on all the goings of there 3 daughters who post all the time about what there up to. I know that sometimes we think such things are a waste but than as you say C/A could be in the same category as FB. I guess it all depends on our priorities. So she is in her right to not like FB. I think its a mistake but hey, that's life.

No, it's more like actions have consequences. If someone has a degree in accounting and they go in for an interview and during the background check it's found out that that person has filed bankruptcy and still has a lot of debt, one can come to the conclusion that that person can't handle money and I'm not sure I would want that person to handle my business's money. No one is saying a person can't go into debt or file bankruptcy, but it might have negative consequences if you are applying for a monetary-type job. Likewise, no one is saying you can't put whatever you like out on the internet, but since it is a public venue, be warned it could come back to haunt you.
