Student dies a day after crash in hills

OAKLAND — Golden Gate Academy student Micah Sheppard died Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after an SUV he was riding in rolled over on Mountain Boulevard near Redwood Road.

Sheppard, 17, was one of four passengers in a Ford Exhibition when driver Hiram Navarro-Lascon, also 17, lost control less than a block away from the private school the students attended.

Police have said Navarro-Lascon may have been speeding and weaving in and out of traffic when he lost control about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers in the Oakland police traffic unit were unavailable Wednesday for comment on the investigation.

Sheppard, a junior at the school, was ejected from the car through a passenger window. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

He died Wednesday at 12:20 p.m. in the Intensive Care Unit of Highland Hospital Oakland, where he had been in critical condition since shortly after the accident.

Another student, a 17-year-old Vallejo girl, was taken to Highland Hospital for observation and released.

School officials said Tuesday the accident was a tragedy for the small Seventh-day Adventist community. About 160 students in grades 1-12 attend the school. School officials could not be reached Wednesday.

The kids think they are invincible - and that includes not wearing seatbelts. Another tragedy in an SDA educational institution so soon. I pray for the others who were injured, his fellow students, his family.

A student at our local public highschool killed himself in a similar manner, and a similar vehicle, about 6 months ago. The passenger in the same vehicle walked away - the passenger had been wearing his seatbelt.

Why does the SDA denomination waste so much time teaching these kids about the evils of drinking coffee?
