HONG KONG (AP) -- Boy scouts typically prove their mettle with fishing and camping skills, but now they can win laurels by showing their awareness of copyright laws.

The Hong Kong government has launched the "IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) Scout Badge" to promote respect of intellectual property among youngsters.

Scouts qualify for the badge by attending seminars and other activities on the topic, the government said in a statement seen Wednesday. The program will initially target scouts between 11 and 16 years old.

"It is a long-term process which involves continuous training of scout members throughout their formative years," Stephen Selby, director of the government's intellectual property department, said in the statement.

Officials have promised to step up copyright protection efforts in Hong Kong, which is known for its fake luxury goods and illegally copied music and films.

Heh, hope it also trains them into a critical understanding of IP practices and laws, so that they are informed enough to vote against things like Disney's perpetual lobbying to increase the length of copyright and keep stuff out of the public domain. It'd be a shame if Pathfinders/Scouts just trained people to be better consumers for the megacorps.
