The USA a Democracy or a Republic?

Let's discuss why the United States is a “republic” and not a “democracy.” Tom Mullen, author of A Return to Common Sense: Reawakening Liberty in the Inhabitants of America, wrote: “Give yourself a test. Without doing a web search or whipping out that pocket U.S. Constitution. . . fill in the blank in the following sentence: The U.S. Constitution guarantees to every state in the union a _____form of government. If you are like ninety percent of the American electorate, you answered 'democratic' and you were wrong. So what's the difference and does it really matter? In a democracy, the will of the majority is the law. Fifty-one percent of the vote empowers the winners to exercise any power they wish. Not so in a republic. THE REASON THE FOUNDERS CONSTRUCTED A CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC WAS TO PROTECT AMERICANS FROM DEMOCRACY.

The United States of America is NOT a Democracy; The United States of America is a Constitutional Republic: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, One Nation Under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All!"

Benjamin Franklin mused that democracy was like “two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.” Also, “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic. petrie.myweb.uga.edu/poor_richard.html

In other words, the essence of republicanism is that reflective reason would triumph over the transient passion of the majority. REMEMBER, MADISON, JEFFERSON AND FRANKLIN SPOKE WHILE OBSERVING THE HORROR OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION WHERE “DEMOCRACY” WAS THEIR BATTLE-CRY!

In this connection, I am reminded of Ronald Reagan who said “Freedom is never more than one generation from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. I just wanted to clear up this misconception (of the meaning of “democracy”), because whoever controls the language, controls society. It's time we took back our country, including our language and culture!

"Progressives" (as they like to call themselves) since the early 20th century all knew full well that we are a Constitutional Republic, but like many of our politicians and academics today, they felt that the Constitution of the United States of America was an impediment to their agenda and needed to be update! Ergo: one of the myriad things that has been done to combat the Principles of Liberty Enshrined in the Constitution of the United States of America, was to promote the falsehood that we are a democracy, rather than a Republic.

Whoever controls the language, controls society. I love what you posted. It is so very true. I get so tired of correcting people and telling how we are a constitutional republic. But then, I have a masters in American History and love our constitution and all it represents.

This is a good post. I am currently reading David McCullough's "John Adams". He also understood like Jefferson, Franklin the dangers of unbridled democracy. Adams lived in France before the French Revolution, was well read and understood the need of seperation of church and state. As I read this it is evident to me how God led them to form our Constitution and Bill of Rights. It also gives one cause to grieve what is happening to this form of government in our current society.

monty, I know what you are saying, but while grieving just remember that things must really get bad before Jesus comes, so we can change that grieving back to joy, that things are going to happen just as we find them in the book of Revelation. And we have not seen anything yet my friend.

It once was a republic but now is quickly changing to a dictatorship and America is soon to not be as it once was or ever will be again. People all need to read George Washington's vision of the third peril this country is to endure, then it is over. The Lord chose to show our country's beginning leader what the finish would be.

Why was this Republican form unable to provide freedom for its citizens until the mid 1960's whereas other democracies were able to provide freedom earlier?

The American "republic" has "been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property". What went wrong? How is it possible to return to a "freedoms" that never existed?
