Members phkrause Posted April 15, 2012 Author Members Posted April 15, 2012 I've worked with Manuel for many years and he always drives his own car to the job, snow or no snow. But he can still be a lot of fun. Good one Doug Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Doug Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I have always wanted to know. My next car will be a manual for sure. Quote

Administrators Gail Posted April 18, 2012 Administrators Posted April 18, 2012 Which one? The manual one. You drive the slowest you can in the highest gear you can and you get great traction that way. I've never had an accident in the snow. Kountzer Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I learned to drive manual or standard transmission vehicles when I was 13 or 14, before I got a permit. My Stepdad, who sleeps the long sleep, taught me. I've owned several small pickup trucks, at least two of them were manual. My current truck is automatic, but I wish it were manual. I even taught my cousin to drive manual when we were 14 or 15. I also showed him how to order a jack in the box burger and eat it while driving a manual car. It is not easy, but it can be done. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
Moderators LynnDel Posted April 18, 2012 Moderators Posted April 18, 2012 My parents' rule for us kids was: You can drive the automatic only after you learn to drive the stick shift. They took us on the dirt roads around Tucson, and we learned everything we needed, including how to stop and go on steep hills without rolling backwards, which came in mighty handy, I can tell you, during my later drives in San Francisco. I somehow graduated without drivers' ed or training, but my parents, primarily my mother because she had the time, did a good job. Even learned how to parallel park, though when I do it now, I miss the saguaro cactus markers. Quote LD
Moderators Gerr Posted April 18, 2012 Moderators Posted April 18, 2012 Anyone here ever been stuck in a SoCal rush hour traffic? You'd probably curse the day you got that stick-shift. Quote
Moderators LynnDel Posted April 18, 2012 Moderators Posted April 18, 2012 Oh yeah, Gerry, many a time. Stick shift didn't bother me. It is good leg exercise, keeps the blood flowing. Quote LD

Not a problem at all! The motions become automatic (no pun intended here), so much so that when I drive an automatic I find myself pushing my left foot to the floor when it's time to shift gears! :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Have been stuck in lots of traffic jams in and around Boston for many years. But the worst traffic jams by far were living in NYC, driving on the Long Island Express! Better known as the Long Island Parking lot. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Aliensanctuary Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Never had a problem with standard xmsns until my recent purchase of a Chevy Silverado PU. Doesn't like to go into gear far too often, which is a real problem when trying to downshift to pass another vehicle uphill. Grrrrr....
