Moderators LynnDel Posted May 7, 2005 Moderators Posted May 7, 2005 I opened my cell phone just now to make a call, only to find that I have a very strong signal, but it can't seem to get out of "searching" mode. I can't call out and can't receive calls. Maybe this magnetic field shift I've heard about vaguely is already happening. I hadn't heard a thing about this until a bunch of students came to school Thursday, terrified that the world was coming to an end on that day because of something they'd heard on the news about the magnetic shift. American news being what it is, making everything sound important or terrifying and giving more details about Michael Jackson than anyone really needs to know, I don't listen to it much, so I'd missed this announcement. The internet doesn't provide much info, except for the persistent. Here is one commentary I found: a blog critique of Phillip McFadden's The Magnetic Field of the Earth (<--- click here). Blogger Bennett Dawson summarizes the book's info this way: [:"blue"]Our magnetic field is showing signs of an immanent [not sure if he means immanent or imminent] pole shift (give or take a few hundred years), north will become south, and when it does flip the effects will touch every acre of our globe. Studies show that during the transition phase, solar radiation will increase dramatically, leading to tens of thousands of additional deaths from skin cancer each year. Once the magnetic field is firmly established in its new orientation, its shielding properties will once again protect the Earth from this deadly radiation, but for a quite a few years things will be very strange indeed. Scientists predict that there will be random patches of "north" almost anywhere on Earth, "Northern Lights" will appear, again, anywhere on Earth. Navigating by compass will become impossible, and there could be a worldwide disruption of radio communications (cell phones too). However, this probably won't happen in my lifetime. [/] Which all comes down to - why isn't my cell phone working? You see how superficial our lives can be. Quote LD
Moderators LynnDel Posted May 7, 2005 Author Moderators Posted May 7, 2005 Question for the scientists out there: What is your take on this? Is this just a theory from a guy who wants attention? If there is any validity to the idea, how does a creationist view it? Do we who believe in Jesus' soon return just chuck it out along with a lot of the other scientific theories out there? Mind you, this possible phenomena does not scare me; I just find it very interesting. LD Quote LD
Amelia Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 From what little Ive read about this, the poles have switched before. But a long time ago. How they know this, I dont know. But my cell is working ok so I must be in a random patch of north. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mittelgr124.gif" alt="" /> Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>
bevin Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 The field does flip Life as we know it has survived several such flips without major problems. The magnetic field is useful, but it is not critical. /Bevin Quote
