Santorum mailer: Romney as GOP nominee 'frightens me'

A Rick Santorum fundraising mailer that hit Iowa households Monday -- nearly a week after he dropped his presidential bid -- is raising eyebrows because it harshly attacks the presumptive GOP nominee, Mitt Romney.

The mailer, first reported by the Des Moines Register, contains a letter signed by Santorum that says, "It truly frightens me to think what’ll happen if Mitt Romney is the nominee."

"My friend, Republicans and conservatives will be crippled by a nominee who presents zero contrast with Barack Obama on the major issues of this election," the letter says, repeating an attack on Romney that Santorum made constantly on the campaign trail. "Any attempt by Mitt Romney to attack President Obama's positions on healthcare, energy policy, social issues, or the economy will be easily neutralized."

Santorum dropped out of the presidential race a week ago and has yet to endorse anyone. During a Monday evening phone call with supporters, when backers asked who they ought to vote for in upcoming primaries, Santorum urged them to vote their conscience and pointedly did not endorse Romney.

"As far as how you vote, that’s up to you," Santorum told thousands of supporters on the conference call. "I haven’t supported any candidate at this point, so that’s really up to you."

Alice Stewart, a Santorum spokeswoman, said the mailer was approved, paid for and sent before Santorum dropped out of the race.

Didn't the issue of dog meat come up after the dems got so desperate they went after Romney for having the kennel with his dog on the roof of his car years ago.

Your 'why' questions would get more responses if they made sense, Woody. Obama is not eating dog meat now, when he can afford better. He is reported to have eaten it as a child, when he was just another kid.

The question of Obama eating dog meat would not have come up if the troubling and serious question of the dog on the roof of the car years ago hadn't come up.

Both are ridiculous and one ridiculous charge was used to answer another ridiculous "serious and troubling issue"

If Romney doesn't go after every ridiculous charge or issue Obama makes he will lose. Obama has very little else besides free women's contraception or whether Romney's wife "ever worked a day in her life"

Certainly, happy to.

1. His continuation and expansion of the Bush attacks on privacy, on habeas corpus and on a whole range of other freedoms. (Maybe the terrorists do hate your freedom, but it's your own government that's taking it away as fast as it can, and far from reversing the trend Obama has accelerated it.)

2. The drone attacks and other extra-judicial killings, and the policy that even US citizens can be killed without trial.

That's a decent set to start with, of the most egregious and disappointing issues in relation to Obama.

Far, far more important than whether he nommed down on Rover as a boy...

Obama eating dog comes from his autobiography so let's just say it is pretty reliable. I agree it is a trivial issue, as is Romney's dog on vacation with them. Yes, it is Axelrod that has made it an issue. However, when Obama wrote about eating dog he also wrote about eating snake and said his grandfather taught him that one takes on characteristics of what one eats. So what is Obama's point? He has taken on characteristics of a dog and snake? I don't think I would have put that sort of thing in my autobiography. The real issue (if there is one) surrounding Obama's dog eating childhood is that of pagan religion. Many pagan religions teach that one takes on characteristics of what they eat. That is fundamental in cannibalism. Of course we know that Obama became a Christian after attending Reverend Wright's "God-damn-America" church.
