Rationalisation, though, I'm afraid. The texts in Ezekiel say 'Tyre', not 'Phoenecian Tyre'.

I'm reacting more to the evangelists, than to the Bible, though: how many times have I heard them solemnly pronounce "And if you go to Tyre today you will see them spreading the fishing nets on the bare rocks..."?

I hear what your saying. I just get the impression that the original city was not rebuilt. Kind of reminds me of Jericho! Which also was never to be rebuilt but obviously it was rebuilt but at a different location! Be it a few feet, miles or whatever away. Not sure how this ties in with what your trying to get at, but I did think the link was interesting. (I originally posted as a bit of a general-interest thing, linking the texts in Ezekiel with Google Maps' satellite imagery, but it's beginning to veer into a theological direction, so I'm very happy if the mods decide to move it out of Town Hall)

I guess part of it is that we so often hear fulfilment of prophecy used as evidence for the veracity of the Bible.

Then it turns out that the prophecy, in the clear plain and literal sense that we're told we must read the Bible, has not been fulfilled.

We point this out, and are told 'Ah, but if you stand on one leg, squint one eye, hold your mouth right - and add words to the text that are not there - then you will see that in fact the prophecy 'was' fulfilled after all!'

Sorry, it just doesn't wash.

And just watch: the next gambit (not accusing you, pk, just talking about the patterns I've observed) will be to call me a 'mocker' or something similer - to go 'ad hominem' rather than deal with the evidence.

Tyre is a bustling small city of over 100,000 people.

I didn't think you were and I'd never mock you for that either. I generally like what you have to say. there are times I'd say its a little far out there, but hey, I believe God likes us to ask and seek answers. I don't believe he intends us to knock his word down bit by bit. And not accusing either, just saying. :)
