My Word by Alan Grayson: Don't believe chamber's TV attack ads

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has begun running ads in Orlando attacking Sen. Bill Nelson and me.

The gist of the ads is that Nelson and I supposedly supported legislation that would cause 20 million people to lose their current insurance coverage. This is ironic, since if there is one principle that I stood for when I was in Congress, it was health care for all, rich or poor.

The journalism website PolitiFact.com called the chamber's claim a "pants-on-fire" lie, as in "liar, liar, pants on fire." The Annenberg Foundation's Factcheck.org, an independent, nonpartisan group, has rated the chamber's claim misleading. On the contrary, the legislation that Nelson and I supported actually increases coverage, extending it to more than 30 million people who don't have it now.

Florida has the second-highest percentage of uninsured people in the country: 20 percent. Among Latinos, the figure is 40 percent. Our polling shows that Latinos rate health care as important an issue as jobs — probably because there are so many of us with jobs, but without health insurance.

Under the legislation for which Nelson and I voted, health-insurance companies can't deny coverage or care because of pre-existing conditions. They can't pull the plug if care becomes too expensive. They have to allow parents to cover their children's care up to age 26. Families with insurance will receive "affordability credits" to help pay for insurance, up to an income level of $88,000 for a family of four. The Medicare doughnut hole is being closed, and seniors don't have to pay deductibles or co-payments for routine care.

No wonder the only way that the Chamber of Commerce can attack this legislation is to lie about it.

The D.C. newspaper "The Hill" recently reported that Republicans inWashington, D.C. have decided not to present any comprehensive alternative to Obamacare this year.

Which means that after almost four years of debate, the national Republican health-care plan still is this:

Don't get sick.

We were subjected to seemingly non-stop ads by Alan Grayson when he first ran for office. Then he was defeated. Now he's back again. I don't know about his politics, but he sure is a nasty person...he makes very rude remarks about those who oppose him and his views, not about their positions, but about their persons.

Yes. That is clearly the dirty part of politics with some politicians. And those that scream the most seem to DO it the most.
