Seventhlove Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 A guest speaker at my church quoted Ellen G. White in which Sister White said if we do not attend Sabbath school, prayer meetings, and church service regularly, we will not get into heaven. What?! To me this sounds like works and one of the many reasons I left the catholic church, only to be hearing the same thing here. We can not earn our salvation. I do not go to Sabbath school or prayer meetings at all but I do go to church as much as I can, always on time. If Sister White is right, I guess I will not be going to heaven then...but I do not believe this at all. If the Bible doesn't say it, I don't believe it and i've never studied anything like this during my Bible study. Anyone know which book EGW wrote what i've stated above in, so I can read it for myself.? Do we really believe that if we're not always in church we won't make it to heaven? Quote
OzarkWoman Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Anybody that actually believes that can't think, in my opinion that is. Quote

Yes I'd like to see that myself. If she did say something to that effect, I bet its being taken out of context, as many things have been done. According to John 3:16, our ability to go to Heaven is based on a love relationship between God and those who believe in Him through Jesus Christ. To those going to Heaven, the real issue is not how often we go to church; the real issue is how much we love God and how often we invite Him into our hearts and minds so He could help us become more and more like Him. Regarding EGW, the most important thing is not which words she said or she did not say. The most important thing is if, at the personal level, she has a message that will help me or others to have a closer and more loving relationship between God and I or between others and God The problem with EGW’s writings is that many people wish to apply it to themselves and to others without first having a good mastering of the a, b, c of salvation as delineated in John 3:16. It is like building a house by putting a very heavy roof resting on very weak columns while having no foundation. Those people make their own salvation a very difficult business; through their words, they make appear the salvation of others as something that is almost impossible and they become a real public relations nightmare to those good faithful Christians who wish to use a book written by EGW such as “Steps to Christ” as an evangelizing tool in order to bring people to the SDA Church and to win them for salvation. Lysimachus Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I wonder if that pastor would agree with this statement from Ellen White? Quote: Now, those who have had years in this same experience, know not God nor Jesus Christ whom He has sent, and should such go forth as representatives of Jesus Christ? These men will never give the right mold to other minds; they have not grown up to the full stature of men and women in Christ. They simply have the name of Christians but are not fitted for the work of God, and never will be until they are born again, and learn the A.B.C. in true religion of Jesus Christ. There is a little hope in one direction: Take the young men and women, and place them where they will come as little in contact with our churches as possible, that the low grade of piety which is current in this day shall not leaven their ideas of what it means to be a Christian. {12MR 333.1} Quote ~Lysimachus (Marcos S.) Moderators Gerr Posted June 17, 2012 Moderators Posted June 17, 2012 Here are EGW statements regarding attendance at Prayer Meetings: 1. There is necessity for diligence in prayer; let nothing hinder you. Make every effort to keep open the communion between Jesus and your own soul. Seek every opportunity to go where prayer is wont to be made. Those who are really seeking for communion with God will be seen in the prayer meeting, faithful to do their duty and earnest and anxious to reap all the benefits they can gain. They will improve every opportunity of placing themselves where they can receive the rays of light from heaven. {SC 98.1} White, E. G. (1892; 2002). Steps to Christ (98). Pacific Press Publishing Association. 2. Religious privileges have been too much neglected by those employed in the offices. None should engage in the work of God who treat these privileges with indifference; for all such connect with evil angels and are a cloud of darkness, a hindrance to others. In order to make the work a success, every department in the offices must have the presence of heavenly angels. When the Spirit of God shall work upon the heart, cleansing the soul-temple of its defilement of worldliness and pleasure-loving, all will be seen in the prayer meeting, faithful to do their duty and earnest and anxious to reap all the benefit they can gain. The faithful worker for the Master will improve every opportunity to place himself directly under the rays of light from the throne of God, and this light will be reflected upon others. {4T 461.1} Testimonies for the Church, Volume 4. 1855; 2002 (461). Woody Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Quote: You should have asked for the references. Yes. There are all kinds of wild tales about EGW. And then even IF she did say it - in our time, culture, and language - it most likely does not mean the same thing. She was writing for her time and culture. So, we have to be very careful in transfering it into ours. Context is always critical. And then you will have the culture and context wars over what she really did mean. Oh well. Hey - even in my own culture and even when I am face to face with people - I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Windsor Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Someone is just looking at things backwards. Heaven is not earned by going to church regularly. However, does the one who truly loves God regularly neglect the assembling of themselves together as the writer of Hebrews warns against? In the same vein, you can't get to Heaven by not stealing but do people who love God steal? Quote Remember Adventists Online?
