Stan Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Erik A. Bergman, M.D., 59, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away after a short battle with cancer, on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Born Sunday, Aug. 17, 1952, in Takoma Park, Md., he was the son of Arthur Bergman, M.D., and the late Liliane Brennwald. Dr. Erik Bergman was a highly respected ophthalmologist in the community for 25 years and the founding eye surgeon of Bergman Eye Center. In 1979, he received his medical degree from Loma Linda University, Calif. After completing his training, he spent more than three years as an eye surgeon missionary to the people of Swaziland, South Africa. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing the guitar at church, gardening, tinkering with building projects and flying airplanes as a licensed pilot, along with many other interests. He was a member and leader of FaithStep, a Ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist church. He was a devoted father, husband, physician and humanitarian. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Sheri Showalter Bergman; children, Erin Bergman Sperco and husband, Dan, Amy Bergman, Mark Bergman and wife, Joane, Victoria Kenyon, Robert Kenyon and wife, Tiffany; sister, Astrid Sadler and husband, Kevin; and grandchildren, Christian Sperco and Gage Kenyon. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2012, at the Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church, 6437 Jefferson Pike, Frederick, MD 21703, with the Rev. Robert Quintana officiating. There will be a viewing held privately with the family. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
