Umfundize Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 I have noticed (not sure about resource, Barna?) that many of the "newer" generation SDA's do participate in the occational nip, or use of table wine with meals. The Bible offers a number of references as to how wine was used in Bible times: John 2:1-10 at wedding to induce happy feeling? Psalms 104:15. For the sick 1 Tim 5:23. To celebrate Lev 23:13. OK for deacons 1 Tim 3:8. Older women Titus 2:3 Blessings from God Deut 33:28. Seems to me it is the ABUSE of wine that is condemned. The only Hebr. word for strong drink is SHEKAR, not distilled liquer, but perhaps some concoction like he Babilonians' beverage SHIKARU, made from grain.Must have been...beer! Cheers! or not? Quote
philo Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I apologize i for not ´having consultet an arachaeologist about the requirements for üasteurizing or thickening frehsh must/grape juice it to an not fermenting syrup - anyhow, both methods must have been very costly. "Strong drink" as far as I have informations just is beer. Jacob blesses Juda (Gen. 40, : 9 - 12 : "His eyes will be cloudy (KJV . red ) with wine and his teeth white from milk." (Hardly an effect of grapejuice) The priest was called to abstinence - before doing his priestly duty (Lev. 10 : 9 ) The Nazarenes had to follow a versy extensive abstinence - . "All the days of his separation"(that implies - not or a lifetime except especial cases like Samson) Micah 4 : 15 _ prophecY of growing and harvestimg crops, but not enjoying them - taking some time zo fermentod; dried; having to go through a long process to be prepared for consuption (oloives). John 2 : 10 - "oti methyskwsin". methy - intoxicating drink, generally wine (n Grerek epics, lyrics, philosophical writings). mehtyskw - intoxicate, make drunk.;seldom metaphorically : drunk of joy, verv wert ( a rug). Luke 5 : 39 - No man having drunk old wine straightway desires new for he eays :The old s smoother in drinking: Just very right, the new wine still contains more fruit acids, is more dry, more harsh. The old wine is the milder one Some prefer the new wine, fredh after fermentation - - ask a wine grower. I now ave not the time no to quote exactly : The Antique used to mix wine with water - mostly, they had special jusgs for this. Roman sstirical mocking poets described a person a "drinker of pure wine" Quote our of a part we take our knowledge, out of a part we prophesy ( I Cor 13 : 9 )
philo Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Dear Unfundise, some precautions are necesary to be made. Every community, order, church is entitled to define this or that restriction for the members. Together with the great changes in socioeconomical life , maybe in the mid - eighteenth century - groups of Christians increasingly begun to take a stand on the increasing use / abuse of alcoholic beverages. The situation inbetween spread worldwide; now we as a worldwide church also have a responsibility for the fellow believers and for those we invi8te to join us in our faith in the "Third World". So, please understand my contribution just as an illustration : We in this matter really do not have to twist words of Scripture , without getting non - scriptural - - see Rom 14 : 21. Gordon1 Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 It's possible we should abstain from grapes and raisins as well. Quote
Umfundize Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 Should we disfellowship those who use table wine with their meals, like so many Progressives and the younger generation SDA's are doing? I think we ought to tolerate those! Quote
Umfundize Posted August 14, 2012 Author Posted August 14, 2012 Are Progressive Adventists liberals or just more honest? Quote
Moderators lazarus Posted August 14, 2012 Moderators Posted August 14, 2012 It's possible we should abstain from grapes and raisins as well. Why? Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
Gordon1 Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 The Biblical reason for the original prohibition must first be established. Probably to avoid intoxication. Now at the end of time, when clear thinking is required, it could apply as well. Possibly the Nazirite is a type of the 144,000. Quote
Femster Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 OK, i am going to throw my two cents worthin here. I have just about given up drinking. And i mean it. The only time i really do any now is when i am out, and my back goes out- as I have had 3 back surgeries, i find it to e the quickest methos of relaxiong the muscles in my back so the pain backs off. May i also tell the truth in that i did use to drink and drive- but no more! I only have 2 glaases of wine at best- maybe a beer- but it is PURELY medicinal. I know i was shown in the bible passages where it says to " give a little wine to the sick and dying" OK, i am neither sick nor dying but i am in chronic pain. ANd i do it for my heaht as well. Quote
Umfundize Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Gezundheid! You are within the parameters of the Scriptural directives mentioned in the first post. If, at bedtime, you drink two glasses of wine instead of one, you will not only find relief of pain, but it will put a smile on your face, which the wife might even like! Quote
