oh, my goodness, I get so many of these every day it's amazing. Probably at least 5 a day--this, or a variation of the same. Amazing.

This is weird. I am related to George Ulrich, but I don't believe he ever lived in Nigeria, and I'm pretty sure I'd know if he lost his life. Supposing this scam were about any actual person, I'd rather have them living than have all the money they might have left any lost relatives.

These scams seem to cycle, get a lot and then they drop off and for some reason they are really heavy just now.

LynnDel--it started as soon as we got this account. I think it's because it's a Hong Kong ISP. My Gmail and Hotmail accounts don't get these (they just get the nasty X-rated ones), so I think it's not as much my personal address as the HK ISP. *sigh*

I get these all the time too! They try to find people who believe this, and after you respond, they ask for your address, and so on, until they want to deposit the money in your checking account, and want the checking account # to deposit the money in. The first time, they used my last name Byers, of a relative who was in a horrible car crash that had lots of money. They make it seem real. I have learned to be careful, and delete these right away. Last time we discussed this, Gail posted the link to www.scamorama.com. Go there to find out all you wanted - and did not want - to know about these things. There are a few instances of where the scammers were taken on at their own game and beaten.

There have been a couple of reports on the current affairs programs here in the last few months of people who have been scammed going to a TV station who have played along and then brought the police in, resulting in some arrests. From memory I think those incidents were from the UK.

There are variations of this scam. Some from South Africa others from Nigeria. The ones from Nigeria are actually crooks from that country. I read where one treasurer of a church got sucked into that scam and even met the nigerians behind the scam. They would not meet him in the USA but met him in Europe. He set up the church bank account for them to use. They drained the church bank account and he never got any money at all.

Any email that ask for your bank account number is a scam. It plays on the greed of human beings to make a fast buck. It is a very sucessful scam unfortunately. To many fall for that scam.

Scam alert: Beware of counterfeit postal money orders

By Ed Teachout

and KATU News

Wilsonville, Ore. - In a new twist to an old scam, foreign crooks are counterfeiting U.S. Postal money orders to steal your cash.

Brandon Goertler of Wilsonville says a man claiming to be from Nigeria sent him five U.S. Postal Service money orders totaling $5,000 in response to an ad to rent an extra room.

Goertler says he was skeptical about receiving the money orders until his bank handed him the cash.

However, after Goertler cashed the money orders, he got an e-mail from the Nigerian saying he was ill and needed $4,000 sent back to Africa to help pay bills.

"He actually asked me to send it in cash and I did," Goertler said.

That made Goertler one of the thousands of victims who have fallen prey to crooks counterfeiting postal money orders.

"Nigerians are very successful at this," says U.S. Postal Inspector Larry Dziomba. "They send out thousands and thousands of these and if they can hit dozens of people, they are making money on this."

Dziomba says in the past six months, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bogus postal money orders have been sent from overseas.

"It's a big, big problem," he says.

All postal money orders now have an embedded security strip and watermark similar to U.S. currency.
