The Sabbath - a sign that I am (present tense) saved in Christ!

"It is finished."

What was finished?

Romans 5:10 "...when we were God's enemies (unbelievers), we were (past tense) reconciled to Him through the death of his Son"

Did you get that? When Christ died (and He tasted death for all men) we were reconciled to God. What does that mean?

Romans 5:18 "So then as through one transgression (Adam's) there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness (Christ's doing & dying)there resulted justification of life to all men.

So "in Christ" God's work of redemption of the human race was complete when Christ died.

What day was it when Christ died?

John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!".... 31 Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Okay, it was the preparation day (our Friday).

Let's go to Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice (remember, He said "it is finished), He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.' " Having said this, He breathed His last....54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.

So when Christ died the Sabbath was just around the corner. Keep in mind the Sabbath goes from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

Heb 4:4 For He (God) has spoken in a certain place (namely in Genesis) of the seventh day in this way: "And God rested on the seventh day from all His works"

What does it mean that God rested from all His works. What work did He do?

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

Why did God rest?

Was He tired?

No, God doesn't get tired.

Then why? Because His work of creation was perfect - it was complete - and therefore it was finished. He didn't add to His perfect creation after that first Sabbath.

The sacrifice was completed at the cross but the atonement is not yet finished. That will happen when He stands up at the Golden Altar and says it is done.

Re 16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

Re 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Re 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

The subject is the Sabbath. Why can't you stay with the subject? Why must you always go off on your law/works rant? I for one am tired of it.

The problem is the Sabbath, as it points to creation, no longer points to final & complete work. That's because the fall destroyed the Sabbath’s significance, since sin is turning from God-dependence to self-dependence.

What did God say to Adam after he fell?

"From now onward you will eat your bread by the sweat of your brow."

Before that, God worked for Adam. When you read about the Garden of Eden, it says it was God who planted the garden for Adam. Now God says,

"From now onward you will eat your bread by the sweat of your brow."

That means, “You will have no rest.” So the fall destroyed the significance of the Sabbath.

The creature/Creator relationship was always to be a relationship of total dependence. God never created man to live independent of Him. That’s why Jesus said,

"Without Me you can do nothing."

So when Adam sinned he departed from God-dependence. In order to restore the Sabbath rest to man, Jesus came to work again. He said “I must work the works of my Father.” What was the work that God gave Him to do?
