tribeofjudah Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 In John 20:22, it sounds like God gave men/disciples the power to FORGIVE. It is confusing because only GOD can truly forgive men. But here are my thoughts on the verse: Just my 2cents: we are clearly given authority to forgive one another. Col 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also [do] ye. Yes, only God can forgive the "masses"....not man or priest. Let us forgive one another freely. Perhaps this is what this text in John 20;22 is speaking about... what say you, Bible Scholars? Quote

These were the Disciples whom He gave the Holy Spirit and it cannot be denied this was true for them I'm sure. It is like a prophet of God has to be given that office from Him and I find the same case here. The Holy Spirit in them they were guided of Him Himself to forgive or not to, they of self were not the forgiver I'm sure. Only He knows the heart. The same cannot be of any that God don't ordain the same and I don't know of any unless some later were that were with Him. 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Do you think that perhaps only God can forgive the masses, but perhaps it is our personal responsibility to forgive those within our sphere of influence? tribeofjudah Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 I don't have a problem with this Bible text in John and I'm sure that Jesus CAN DO whatever he wishes........HE IS GOD. If he gave his disciples/apostles the gift to forgive, well then I am just fine with that. The problem becomes: when regular folks take this to the extreme and start "practicing" FORGIVENESS....ala the Catholic priests. This can certainly take a wrong turn and exploiting a Bible text to promote their OWN selfish desires. Quote
Members phkrause Posted August 20, 2012 Members Posted August 20, 2012 I agree only God can truly forgive us our sins, etc. But we can forgive our follow man for what they have done to us personally. I cannot forgive you for sinning against your wife, son, brother, father, etc. Only you can do this, and as it says in the Bible, if we forgive those that have done us wrong, than he will forgive us what we have done before him.
