I've been listening to Dr. Nedley's recent ASI message.

I can't get enough of this stuff! I love facts and data...

At home I have begun reading his depression book. It's been food for hubby and me as we do our evening drives.

Anyone else a fan of learning how the brain works?

I appreciate Neil too.

Yes, it is interesting to learn about how the brain works.

The Nedley's are very kind, gracious, Godly people who are the same in person as in public.

It's all good!

Depression makes many other diseases WORSE (like cancer or hypertension and heart disease), and a serious depression can be responsible for an onset of others like asthma, for example. It has to do with hormones, a big one being cortisol.

Depressed people have smaller hippocampuses (hippocampi?) which affect memory. Children who suffer from depression often do not perform well in school, hindering their chances for the future in school and later on in the workforce.

Because of the physical effects of depression (this is other than moodiness and sadness and fatigue), Nedley is adamant that this is treated early and treated effectively. People just don't survive strokes, cancer or heart disease well or for long when depressed. It contributes to decreased bone density, actually leading to osteoporosis.

In older people depression will cut short a lifespan. It will bring on physical disability as well.

Fascinating stuff! I love facts like this! But I am feeling like I need to make some lifestyle changes upon reading these things. It's all good.

True, Gail. Neil is one of our best sources for understanding clinical & biological depression. And I think John Regier is one of the better sources for understanding emotional & spiritual causes for depression.

Sorry, my Dear. At a SDA physicians meeting for the first time through all the decades I just went out, not longer standing his rubbish. I tell you, also from bedside teaching, that one needs about 10 years of internship to know the basics of Psychiatry - look at Nedleys curriculum.

He is not aware of symptoms you have to see or ask for : The Verragut crease, the tearless crying of Niobe, the dry mouth ( - you can notice it in talking with the patient), the worse time from morning to early afternoon afterwards changing to "normal ( 5 p.m. : "I really now do not know why I am here in your practice, Doctor!"), the "nothingness", no appetite/taste ( eats two or three portions of his favourite dish, seeking the experience of the usual fine taste) - -

Did not present follow - up studies . If you survive, a depression usually vanishes spontaneously, repeatedly; did - soooo much to do - not stay for discussion, presented therapies as if his own discovery, that are in use - or already out of use - for some (sleep withdrawal) or many (cold water) decades.

His emphasis on "emotional intelligence" : What do ethicists , theologians say to this brainwashing method ?

The - of course not coed - pyjama parties ? Is that man totally blind about what he does with the emotions of his patients ?

Yet : He has read a lot and quotes the sources. I only doubt that he understands what he has read; I also - see the question about his curriculum - doubt that he ever had or took the chance of controlled experiencing.

See also I John 2 : 16.

I apologize : Really not overlooking Neil Nedleys contributions (were there any except the one, irst ?) to "Adventist Review" there he gave an advice whihc ba a psychiatrist reader was classified as malpractice.

I apologize once again : If you arte interested, read Job 33 : 14 -30 and find the perfect description of a maior depression with all its symptoms and an interpretation of its effect on ones spiritual life.

At the very meeting I first mentioned also Univ. Prof. Dr. Thomas Haenel from Swizerland , out of an old SDA family , assistant of Kielholz, who had Price CAlus of the Netherlands as in - patient, who had introduced the sleep depravation therapy decades ago, , was also present and untimely left. I would have been very interested in the discussion with this worldwide approved specialist.

A last question : Please estimate how many patients NN (psychiatric AND neurological cases)could have observed, their development and progress controlled also by al the means of neuroimaging - MRT, PET, SPECT - - I just tell you of one brain stem stroke (controlled this way) having difficultiesn in speaking and spelling correctly (!) - usually said to be a function of the upper brain. And I could tell you long stories of persons sufferig from defects or atrophies of hippocampus, fornix, amygdala we always discussed , - -as Monakow already said quite long ago : Diaschisis - the brain functions in a complex totality.

I don't think that he claims to be a psychiatrist or psychologist. I haven't gotten that idea from the books. What he provides are statistics, yes, and helpful tips on easy, inexpensive things that we can do to help ourselves.

What I am understanding so far is that he is actually promoting that more people out there SHOULD be under a physician's care, because of the physical effects of depression upon a person's general health.

This will not take the place of the mind physicians, but could work to be supportive to their care.
