Agape Me This. . .

"26 ¶ Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;

27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:

28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

29 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal.

30 Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?

31 For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein.

32 And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day." (Deut 11:26-32)

What Would Jesus Do?

Would Jesus deliver the 40 stripes Himself to the wicked man since He personally gave this civil statute to Moses which allows the judges of Israel to mete out this severe punishment upon the wicked man?

"1 If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.

2 And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.

3 Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee."(Deut 25:1-3)

I don't see any reason why Jesus wouldn't administer the stripes. But first the wicked man would need to be given a fair hearing in front of a properly appointed judge of Israel, with two or three witnesses (not just hearsayers) giving testimony. The judge would determine the number of stripes that the man deserved, according to his crime. Depending on the circumstances Jesus could serve as the judge, or as the person who administered the stripes.

When Jesus was on trial, he received the stripes that I deserve, though the trial was neither fair nor legal.

When Jesus returns, he will be the righteous judge of the living and the dead. (2Tim 4:1) Scripture indicates that some will receive at that time a more severe sentence than 40 stripes.

Ummmm ... I'm uncomfortable with even discussing this kind of stuff. Is telling people that Jesus may personally beat the "hell" out of them if they are wicked really a way to endear them to the Lord? If Jesus were the kind of Person to beat people up, why did He tell us to "turn the other cheek? Why didn't He ever tell sinners "Here - have some leprosy!" Even when He comes to judge; I think it will be with extreme sadness that He will punish anyone. Is. 28:20-22 seems to describe the destruction decreed as God's "Strange" act.

Speaking of strange - this is a strange topic. I've always personally found it much more encouraging and healthy to focus on trusting God's love than dreading His wrath. Love is a much more effective and permanent motivator for compliance than is fear.

Maybe it's just me; but I think we need to terminate this unhealthy kind of talk.

I rather think though JM that it is a matter of what He sees in a person, He knows us better than we know ourselves. Here is an example of His Wrath when here with us and I know who will administer the fire of damnation of hell He says they are going.

Mt 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Mt 23:34 ¶ Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

Mt 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

Mt 23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

Mt 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Mt 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

Outlaws can not expect to get away with it, not outlaws toward God, He sees all! But some escape the law of men because they are not caught.

To His own He catchs up in His arms of love but the wicked are consumed in His Presence and all counted that way will be in just a little nore than a 1,000 yrs at the second resurrection.

However He continues to love the wicked and would that they turn from it.

Eze 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

I know that judgement is coming for the wicked. Since I love Jesus and He loves me, I don't want to think of Him as wrathful. Many of those who don't believe in Him and love Him probably don't think of Him at all. Unfortunately, some who have given up on Him have done so because of the terrible way some of the "faithful" have treated them "in the Name of Jesus". When we judge, harshly rebuke, or otherwise condemn others or use "scare" tactics to instill the fear of the Lord into them, we terribly misrepresent Christ; and risk taking onto ourselves the same judgement and punishment with which we threaten others.

When we ask ourselves WWJD, we would do well to think about what He did here as a man, not what we might think He will do as a judge. It's not our place to judge anyone - we're not King Jesus; and we only have experience of knowing the history of what He did as a man for our example.

Jesus pointed out sin and He hated sin. It is not wrong for us to point out what sin is. For sure we cannot condemn but here is a verse on this to consider,

Eze 3:18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

No it is not a pleasant job and EGW shrank from the calling too but God warned her of the consequences. Two men had refused Him before her. I posted that story in this forum.

One thing we must be careful of and that is being "Eli's". We can be too soft and we can be too hard.

Jesus was very direct and outspoken at times we know for sure. We must be led of His Spirit on these things and all things.

To uncover the mercy or character of God is to do what God has been doing ever since this sinful world began, answer the critics and naysayers that are motivated by the accuser of the brethren. It does say that Jesus (God)is the same today, yesterday and forever. Chastisement of the wicked is included in the love of God in hopes that the wicked might turn from his/her wicked ways and at last be saved.

"Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" Ezekiel 33:11 ASV

The rod of pain is administered by the enemy of souls, not needed by the ones who follow after Jesus. Even the final death of the wicked is an act of mercy, God not allowing the finally impenitent to live forever in misery.

"For Jehovah will rise up as in mount Perazim, he will be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and bring to pass his act, his strange act." Isaiah 28:21 ASV

If God were forever administering punishment for the malfactor, it wouldn't be a strange act to give final retribution.

I would say far more have turned aside from God as a result of the false doctrine that the wicked do not die but eventually pass over to another form of life to eternal burning fires for just the speck of time spent here on this earth. Considering how long eternity is, God is made out to look even worse than the most brutal of humans, not to mention being as bad as satan at his worse.

40 lashes ain't nothin' compared to getting burned.

Love without justice is anarchy. Justice/mercy without love is tyranny.
