The standard answer given by most SDA is that "sin is the transgression of the law".

Keep in mind that Pharisees were full time law keepers, yet Jesus said, "unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven".

What was wrong with their righteousness? Did they keep the law? Yes, they kept the commandments. In fact they added requirements. For example, not only were you to rest on the Sabbath, but they even limited the number of steps you could take on the Sabbath.

So if "sin is the transgression of the law" the fact is that the Pharisees kept the law. Therefore you would have to conclude that they weren't transgressors, but Jesus said their righteousness wasn't good enough. Can you explain?

Thus saith the Lord. . .

"4 ¶ Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law."(1 John 3:4)

Seems simple enough.

Simple enough and here is more,

Ro 7:7 ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Ro 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

Ro 7:9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

Ro 7:10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

Ro 7:11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

Ro 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Ro 7:13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

Yes for sure sin is trangression of the law. It is of Love and anything not of love to God and our fellow man is sin. It is an infraction of love, the law of love. It is an offense against God who is Love.

Sin is bad stuff. It is a vicious virulent deadly poison that is not easy to deal with, as illustrated in the sanctuary service.

I agree, it is such a deadly vicious thing that it will land us in the lake of eternal be no more fire.

Wonderful Saviour Jesus Christ came and can deliver all who will come and find His way from it.

Blessed be His Wonderful and Holy Name!

Again, you didn't answer the question:

Keep in mind that Pharisees were full time law keepers, yet Jesus said, "unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven".

Robert, I will give you no other answer but what I've given, be at peace.

Paul says that “as touching the law”—as far as outward acts were concerned—he was “blameless”, but when the spiritual character of the law was discerned, when he looked into the holy mirror, he saw himself a sinner. Judged by a human standard, he had abstained from sin, but when he looked into the depths of God’s law, and saw himself as God saw him, he bowed in humiliation, and confessed his guilt. [Ellen White]

Apparently Paul was "blameless" as far as his outward acts were concerned.

And here's Phil 3:6

"concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless"

The Angel told John,

Re 22:10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

Re 22:11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

Re 22:10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

So what is sin? OK, what do you suppose the above are judged by as shown above by. It is violation of the law.

Ellen White states that "the lover of self is a transgressor of the law of God". What commandment says "do not love self"? Yes? I mean you know everything about the law. Paul thought he knew the law as a Pharisee, but then he met God. Job thought he was righteous, until he met God. I believe you have fooled yourself into believing that because you keep rules you are righteous.

You are trying to link self-love as a sin not unto death? Self-love is iniquity - our bent-to-self. It's the main reason we die. You just make this stuff up as you go, don't you?

Again, What commandment says "do not love self"? Yes?

Dear Robert, Nothing of the kind!

"Satan has an accurate knowledge of the sins that he has tempted God's people to commit, and he urges his accusations against them, declaring, that by their sins they have forfeited divine protection, and claiming that he has the right to destroy them. He pronounces them just as deserving as himself of exclusion from the favor of God. "Are these," he says, "the people who are to take my place in heaven, and the place of the angels who united with me? They profess to obey the law of God; but have they kept its precepts? Have they not been lovers of self more than lovers of God? Have they not placed their own interests above His service? Have they not loved the things of the world? Look at the sins that have marked their lives. Behold their selfishness, their malice, their hatred of one another. Will God banish me and my angels from His presence, and yet reward those who have been guilty of the same sins? Thou canst not do this, O Lord, in justice. Justice demands that sentence be pronounced against them." {PK 588.3}

Quote:
What is sin?

Sin is the name that certain religions have given the basic things we have labelled as social wrongs, unacceptable behaviour, and have added in other actions that may disagree with the philosophy of whatever that religion is. Different religions have different sets of "sins" and some religions have none at all. Sin is simply another way to percieve things we don't want people to do to us or tho others.

Thats ok, tis simply my view and belief of what sin is. I know it certainly does not share the same view as Abrahamic religions have of it.

Regardless of whether one sees it as I do or as not heeding the laws of a God - it still seems as though the majority of humans (psychopaths not included) have an instinct for things we feel are not right.
