Moderators lazarus Posted November 14, 2012 Moderators Posted November 14, 2012 The most reliable brand in America is a discount brand, according to data in Consumer Reports that looked at more than 1 million vehicles. The No. 1 brand for reliability is Toyota's Scion. Toyota's own nameplate is No. 2. In third place, we have Toyota's luxury division, Lexus. Isn't it interesting that Scion is one of cheapest cars sold, yet it's the most reliable? High price does not equal quality in the world of car buying; you don't always get what you pay for when it comes to cars. Rounding out the Top 10, you have Mazda, Subuaru, Honda, Acura, Audi, Infiniti, and Kia. My problem is there's not one American made on that list. They're all foreign brands. Of course, most of the vehicles those foreign automaker are selling are made here in America, so this isn't a dis on U.S. workers. But the foreign brands continue to have the highest quality, according to this tally. http://www.clarkhoward.com/news/clarkhoward/cars/consumer-reports-names-most-reliable-vehicles/nD2w/ Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Moderators lazarus Posted November 14, 2012 Author Moderators Posted November 14, 2012 Toyota Motor Corp will recall about 2.77 million vehicles worldwide, including the Prius hybrid car, due to problems with the steering mechanism and the hybrid system water pump. Toyota will recall 13 models sold in Japan between August 2000 and January 2012, it said in a filing with Japan's transport ministry. Some 1.5 million of the recalls are of cars sold in Japan. The announcement comes a month after Toyota recalled more than 7.4 million vehicles worldwide for faulty power window switches that are a potential fire hazard, the biggest single recall since Ford pulled 8 million vehicles off the road in 1996. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/14/toyota-recalls-millions-vehicles_n_2127329.html Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Members phkrause Posted November 14, 2012 Members Posted November 14, 2012 Have a '99 Ford Explorer Eddy Bauer Edition. Made in the good old USA, I believe?, it now has over 223,000 miles. If I'm not mistaken I believe there are quite a number of American made vehicles that have many miles on them. I do agree that there are lazy workers, but disagree there all union workers. My father used to work for the union, one of the strongest at that time, the butchers union, and he told me that all the workers were hard working. I think you mistake break time with laziness. I remember once driving passed a crew of workers on a highway fixing the road and 2 guys working and 2 not. I asked around to find out, before condemning them for being lazy, found out that this happen to be union rules that only 2 were allowed to be in the hole at a time. I also remember when I worked for Faith for Today, we had a shipment of "Telenotes" the monthly newsletter that they mailed out. We got to the place and the break time bell blew and we had to wait 15 minutes till there break was over, this was also a union run shop. Unions have strick rules that there members have to go by. Of course there are many cons to being in the union. Unions are not all bad, and definitely not all good. There are lazy workers everywhere. I've worked for a few non union places and we had numbers of lazy people. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Guest Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I had a 1981 Toyota 4-wheel drive truck that had over 300,000 miles on it. It was running great when I flipped it end over end on my way home from playing in a night club one night. It wasn't my fault. Some guy didn't see me and pulled right in front of me while I was doing about 65 mph. I managed to not hit him at all, but went off an embankment, and end over end. The truck was just a twisted tangled mess with the roof caved in, when it was all over, and I was trapped inside in the dark, in the upside down position. And I couldn't help but notice that the motor was still running. True story. Quote
Guest Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 I think the Lord was with me that night. I didn't get so much as a scratch. I did lose the truck though, and my guitar amp got crunched between the roof and the seat. You wouldn't have thought anybody had lived through it, to look at the truck. I really did like that truck. whatisthis Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Interesting story! Did that change any of your relationship to God when that happened? (Sounds like an exciting turn in the road kind of story, am I right?) Did you have a dog then? Did your parents or your sister know what happened right away? We're all thankful that story worked out without crushing you! Quote more later
Guest Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 I was very grateful to God, but real change was not to come for some time. I had no dog to call my own at the time, and I was living alone. The state trooper was kind enough to give me a ride home, which is unusual. It was late, and there was nobody to call really at that hour, but then I thought of a close friend, and thought maybe she wouldn't mind if I woke her up for this. I felt like I had to tell somebody, because I was pretty shaken up. Well when I told her about what all had just happened she started crying, and I was so traumatized from loosing my truck and all, that I started crying with her. But there's more to the story actually, as far as the accident goes. Quote

Moderators Gerr Posted November 22, 2012 Moderators Posted November 22, 2012 That reminds me of what happened to me MANY years ago. I was in the USN at the time, stationed as a corpsman in Parris Is.,SC. I had recently bought my first car, a 54 Mercury. One hot summer Sabbath, I decided to go to church in Charleston which was over an hour away. It was getting so hot I decided to stop and take my coat off and laid my coat on the backrest of the passenger side. Some of you my remember there was no AC on many cars then, but had those side glass vents in the windows that you can turn to let the air in which I did. I hadn't been driving very far when the strong breeze coming in through those side vents caused my coat to start flying around in the car. I tried to keep it down with my right hand. In the few seconds that my eyes were off the road, I came to a bend on the road and missed it. The car finally came to rest in the bushes off the road. When I looked out, I saw red stuff splattered all over the windshield. I thought it was was my blood and that I was a gonner. I started checking myself all over, but all I found was a torn pocket off my white shirt and no blood. I finally ran my fingers on the windshield but the red stuff won't come off. That's when I noticed that the car had come to rest in the bushes with ripe berries. Thank God, I didn't get a scratch either. There were no seatbelts then. Quote
Guest Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 I remember being angry at the guy who caused this to happen, as I lay inside the twisted pile of metal that used to be my truck. It was dark, and I didn't know how I was going to get out. So I just waited for a minute, making sure I still had all my limbs and whatnot. Then off in the distance, I heard somebody shout. It was faint, but I heard it. There had been nobody else on the road except me and the guy coming in the other direction, who didn't see me, and caused this. And I was a good bit off the road, so I figured that's who it was doing the shouting. He shouted again, this time a little closer. My first thought was, I'm going to shoot this #$@. So I fumbled around until I found my .44 Special that I had with me at the time. Meantime I could hear him getting closer. He was saying, "Are you alright??". I just remained silent, and waited. I was mad. He kept getting closer, and I let him get all the way up to the truck before I spoke. And I said, "Are you the guy who turned right in front of me?" He hesitated, and stammered a little bit, and said y y yes. And I said, "I wish you hadn't of done that". He said: "I do too." I had been thinking as he got closer to the truck: "This guy didn't have to come back, he could have just kept on going. I don't want to shoot him." So I put my gun back in it's case, and let the guy help me out through the front windshield. I was able to get my guitar out, and it was unscathed in it's hardshell case. That and my gun was all I walked away with. The State Trooper must have felt sorry for me, to give me a ride home after he wrote the guy a ticket. He let me put my gun and my guitar in the back seat. We were almost to the house when he asked: "What kind of gun are you carrying?" I said, .44 Special, you wanna see it? He said "No, I just like to know what people are carrying". Had I been drinking that night, the whole story would be different. LOL This happened a long time ago. I was fairly young then. Quote
Guest Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 There were no seatbelts then. You're lucky then. I had my seatbelt on, but the roof was caved in like a V right where my head should have been. I don't know how it missed me. Quote
