WGTS Slips Up

Billing itself as the "family friendly" station and playing contemporary Christian music (the same 40-50 songs over and over again), SDA-owned and -operated WGTS has slipped up. They have frequently aired a telephone number to call if one ever catches them airing anything not in good taste. Well yesterday on my way home I heard two things objectionable. First they aired a generic churchian 1-minute message about the "afterlife" which intimated that after death, our "spirits" go on living forever. That wasn't so bad, although I felt it inappropriate for a station run by a church that proclaims death as a sleep according to Scripture. But then during the traffic report one of the fellows was yukking it up over some fax or something he'd received and making fun of the person's name because it was foreign and he couldn't pronounce it! I couldn't believe my ears as I heard these two guys totally trashing someone's name just like they were a couple of beer-swilling frat brats. No consideration whatsoever for that person's feelings -- or, for that matter, for good taste and decency. Sorry folks, racist ignorance and xenophobia are not "family values." I mean this was on par with people calling Arab folks "rag heads" or calling African-Americans the infamous "N" word. Pure racist garbage.

WGTS is going to hear from me on both counts.

Good work, Nico. At last someone who understands that tolerance and love for one's neighbor are actually in the Bible, not just some sort of hippy lefty pinko communist conspiracy.
