mariann Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 GMO - genetically modified/engineered organism. GM-food - genetically modified/engineered food. Very simplified explication: Genetic engineering - the genetic material may be altered with methods that do not occur naturally - selected individual genes are transferred from one organism to another. Something about injecting swine... Do you have any information about this? Have you heard of this before? Chrys Yea, I know a little about GMOs but haven't heard that tomatoes are genetically modified with pork. Still in theory, genetic engineering allows genetic material to be transferred between any organism, including between plants and animals. (For example, the gene from a fish that lives in very cold seas has been inserted into a strawberry, allowing the fruit to be frost-tolerant.) BUT - as much as I know, such GM-plants shouldn't be currently available yet. AND - organic foods are not genetically modified. Foods certified as organic or biodynamic shouldn't contain any GM ingredients, according to industry guidelines. All GM-foods must be marked as 'genetically modified'. It's late here in my country. But tomorrow I can may be find out this for sure. Quote
