Detroit Councilwoman To Obama: We Voted For You, Now Bail Us Out

Detroit council to consider pension budget amendment

DETROIT (WJBK) -- The city of Detroit faces a major financial crisis and one member of city council thinks President Barack Obama should step in and help.

City Council member JoAnn Watson said Tuesday the citizens support of Obama in last month's election was enough reason for the president to bailout the struggling the city. (Click the video player to listen)

"Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that," said Watson. "Of course, not just that, but why not?"

Nearly 75 percent of Wayne County voters pulled the lever for Obama in November.

"After the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C. He came home with some bacon," said Watson. "That's what you do."

Young served as Detroit's mayor for 20 years and served as vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1977 to 1981.

The White House has expressed no plans to bailout the cash-crunched city that some experts say could run out of money by the end of the year.

The federal government has bailed out cities in the past, however. In 1975, President Gerald Ford extended more than $2 billion in credit to New York City to help it avoid a financial collapse.

Nothing new here, every president that gets elected, has those that think they should get bailed out for one thing or another. I can remember this starting back when Nixon got elected. All the groups, companies, etc., wanted to be able to raise the prices of the products they were selling, like milk, gas, etc., etc. So this is no different, actually the only difference being now they want cities, states, etc. bailed out. And so far I don't see him doing that, as a matter of fact I believe he has already said no, if I'm not mistaken.

The point is Obama and his handouts and bailouts built up a lot of expectations of what groups would receive in exchange for their vote

Obama is never defended on his policies,except by those that have a case of the "give me"

It is either,"They all have done it" absolving current behavior

or it is because he is black,or everyone that is opposed to Obama wants people to starve.

I wonder where you were the eight years Bush was in office as it seems you must not have read the many things said against Bush.Some deserved no doubt.Over the decades we have inched our way a long to the landslide we now have.

Obama by and large won a second term because of what special interest groups were led to believe they would gain from another four years.

Nice to see a little buyers remorse.

I think the Patriot Act was a bad idea. In view of the reasons

following 9/11 most saw it as a reasonable precaution and maybe understandable from that perspective.Obama has taken it far past that. Once the bar is lowered and people are conditioned,all it takes is someone like Obama to come along

and double and triple down.

The Bush stimulus should never have happened,under Obama we are now headed for another as the previous ones have failed.

Where is the previous stimulus and the results in sustainable jobs.You know,those shovel ready jobs that Obama finally admitted didn't exist.

The welfare to work law was a start and should have been built on.Obama has lowered that bar as well.

Got a notice today that the rules for qualifying for SSD have been relaxed and a number to call to see if you qualify.

The list is pretty long and yet people hear that word free or the other guy will pay and it is like they lose their mind.

Yes, we have always had some of this.Obama has lowered the bar so low that millions are willing to step over it,not caring to ask where it will eventually lead them
