Moderators John317 Posted December 14, 2012 Moderators Posted December 14, 2012 If you're going to shoot, always make sure you see your target and can make out what or who it is. It's best to say something first so you give yourself a chance to recognize a voice if it happens to be someone you know. I remember several cases where the father shot and killed his son who was returning from Vietnam. Another father shot and killed his son who was returning from Iraq. They both wanted to surprise their father so they didn't call ahead. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Johann Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 I borrowed this comment of the Fox News: Quote: Kevin Doyle · Top Commenter · St. John's University, Collegeville, MNA friend in the Netherlands explained to me that when there are break-ins over there, it never results in these kinds of tragedies. Neither the burglar or the homeowner is armed, so it becomes a matter of just scaring the burglar off once he realizes he/she is detected. Our society is just absolutely gun-crazy, and to the rest of the world it is obvious. Sadly, our perspective is not as broad as we have become so used to this incredibly violent part of our culture. Stan Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Quote: ROCHESTER, Minn. -Rochester police say a grandfather shot and critically wounded his teenage granddaughter after mistaking her for an intruder. Neighbors identified the shooter as Pastor Stan Wilkinson, who is an associate pastor at the Rochester Seventh Day Adventist Church according to the church's website. Authorities say he and his wife were asleep when they awoke to a noise outside about 11 p.m. Monday. The man grabbed his handgun and told his wife to call police as he went to investigate. Capt. Brian Winters says the grandfather saw a figure at the back door and fired at least two shots. The figure was actually the man's 16-year-old granddaughter, who he thought was already inside the house. The teen, who is in critical condition but is expected to survive, had recently been living with her grandparents. She was hit once in the upper torso and an organ was struck. FOX 9 News learned the 61-year-old grandfather told police a recent burglary at a nearby recreation center was on his mind when he went to investigate the noise; however, authorities say three arrests had already been made in that case by the time the shooting occurred. Authorities say Wilkinson is distraught following the shooting. Police told FOX 9 News they are anxious to speak with the victim, who remains at St. Mary's Hospital. They anticipate it will take a few days for her to recover enough to be interviewed. According to Winters, there is no indication the girl was trying to sneak out of the house. Moderators Gerr Posted December 14, 2012 Moderators Posted December 14, 2012 Should one have more faith in a gun than this? - ESV | ‎Ps 34:7 "The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them." Quote
JoeMo Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Gerry, I don't know about faith in the gun; but I do know if one is considering the possibility of using deadly force, they should be trained in how/when to use it. Quote

Moderators Nan Posted December 14, 2012 Moderators Posted December 14, 2012 Interesting series of posts considering today's tragedy. People not living in the US have a hard time understanding the need and wish to have so many guns in private hands. Of course restricting guns does not totally prevent tragedies....the Port Arthur Massacre in 1996 in Tasmania claimed about 35 lives...but they are certainly not as frequent. Quote
JoeMo Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 In spite of these high profile mass killings by crazies, overall violent crime in the U.S. and specifically violence involving use of a firearm has decreased in recent years. Wanna see it go up again? Try to take away the guns of law-abiding citizens who only want to hunt or protect their loved ones. Quote
Kountzer Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Yep. I knew something would happen in the news to back up previous posts I've made about similar issues. I wasn't expecting this much. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
Administrators Gail Posted December 14, 2012 Administrators Posted December 14, 2012 I understand what Nan is saying... How is it that so many KIDS and young adults have access to weapons and think that dressing up in camo gear and shooting a whole bunch of people is the right answer to their problems? The tragedy that happened today at the elementary school in CT featured a shooter wearing a bullet-proof vest. What for? To protect himself against the women and kindergarten kids he was after? Someone told me (an American) that if the principal had had a gun in the office someone could have stopped the shooter. Is that how everyone down there thinks- just arm everyone? That more guns are the answer? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators Gerr Posted December 14, 2012 Moderators Posted December 14, 2012 I read that terrible news this afternoon. Twenty-seven KIDS died. This is in the wake of that shooting in, I think, Seattle just a few days ago. Quote

Narcah Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 In hindsight it's an obvious tragedy. In foresight, what if it had been a gang banger intent on rape and murder, and the police where an hour away? I guarantee you at my house the response time is well over 20 minutes if there is blood on the ground, much more for "suspicious person," and I live in city limits! Quote -Jason Youtube.com/narcah

The early Adventists made an agreement with president Abraham Lincoln that their young men would serve as medics in the army, but not carrying guns. Quote

Wanna see it go up again? Try to take away the guns of law-abiding citizens who only want to hunt or protect their loved ones. I do not see the need of high power rifles which makes it so easy for murderers to kill so many human beings in such a short time. Had this mad young man a gun which shoots a single bullet at a time, he would have been unable to claim the lives of so many victims in a few minutes. If society makes such high power guns available to civilians, then it should make them also available to teachers. Quote
