Moderators LynnDel Posted December 16, 2012 Moderators Posted December 16, 2012 That is interesting - is it based on actual statistics? What magnet is referred to in the bottom figure? LD Quote LD

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted December 16, 2012 Members Posted December 16, 2012 The image is a magnet for sale online... I thought the concept of comparing the charitable contributions, church attendance and homicides was interesting as a type of measurement. I can't read underneath the image where it supposedly gives the reference to the stats. I'm not convinced it's accurate. From what I recall, the UK doesn't have a very high church attendance rate... cricket Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 On another website it reads, "Based on data from NationMaster" Quote
BobRyan Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Interesting... All of the EU combined - is 50% larger than the entire US. And yet you are comparing a "selective nation state" in the EU to ALL of the US for "quantity". Interesting. Maybe you are doing that for "effect". in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.
Moderators Bravus Posted December 17, 2012 Moderators Posted December 17, 2012 I'd assume the stats used are per capita, otherwise it makes no sense at all. If time permits might run it down myself. Quote Truth is important
BobRyan Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 The first column says it is per capita - -- the other two columns don't. Interesting. Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.
Moderators Bravus Posted December 17, 2012 Moderators Posted December 17, 2012 I get the following, from Wikipedia for the murders: Nation | Charity | Murder (per 100,000) Denmark | | 0.9 Norway | | 0.6 Britain | | 1.2 Switzerland | | 0.7 Canada | | 1.6 Japan | | 0.3 Australia | | 1.0 Spain | | 0.8 United States | | 4.2 Got to feed the dog and go shopping for curtains now, but will try to come back with the charity stats later. FWIW, the graphic is not far off for the homicide rates, adjusted for population size. Quote Truth is important

Moderators Bravus Posted December 17, 2012 Moderators Posted December 17, 2012 The 'World Giving Index' is a self-report measure, so I haven't used its figures. Beyond that, it's really difficult to find the numbers. National foreign aid is complex because the US includes a lot of military aid in those numbers. Many studies suggest that American individuals are very generous in charitable giving, but those numbers are also made complex because they often include giving to their churches, some of which is charitable while other parts are devoted to supporting services for members and to evangelism (neither of which I'm saying are bad things, just not charity). The upshot is that the graphic may not be accurate on this, but I'm struggling to find good stats. Would be delighted if someone else can. Quote Truth is important

Moderators Gerr Posted December 17, 2012 Moderators Posted December 17, 2012 Here is something to consider as a possibility as to why they may be more generous. Most Western European nations have security from the cradle to the grave. They don't have to worry about the tremendous cost of health insurance, etc. Middle class Americans have to worry about health insurance, education for their children, etc. and have less left over? Also we have prostituted our liberties so as to foster a culture of me, me, me, and self-indulgence. There was an ad a few years back that said - "Get all the gusto you can." Quote

Moderators Bravus Posted December 17, 2012 Moderators Posted December 17, 2012 Yeah, I did look quite a bit, but as far as I could see Nationmaster had no 'individual charitable giving' statistic. There were things on foreign aid and a few others, but nothing that seemed to correspond to the thing represented in the graphic. Quote Truth is important
