Woody Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I’m reading the book ‘Prayer’ by one of my most favorite authors – Philip Yancey I have to share a few things I found in my reading today: Why tell God what God already knows? Why ask God to be merciful if God is by nature merciful? “I think prayer is analogous to sex. Most people would complain about their sex lives; a few do really well. Sex and prayer are intimate and over-glamorized relationships. We are all lead to believe that we should be in the stratosphere in sex and in prayer. It sets up a false expectation. ANd breaks down intimacy.” Reading a book about prayer has some parallels to reading a sex manual. Like sex, prayer centers in relationship more than in technique. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Administrators Gail Posted December 18, 2012 Administrators Posted December 18, 2012 Do you agree with that? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Woody Posted December 18, 2012 Author Posted December 18, 2012 with what? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted December 18, 2012 Author Posted December 18, 2012 Another thought he gives is that when you get married you soon discover that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. The same with prayer ... you soon learn that God is from heaven and we are from earth. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
JoeMo Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 I like the analogy. I love Yancey's writing. Another way prayer is like sex in that it is a 2-way street. It's better when both sides actively participate. I find prayer extremely gratifying when God actively answers. Quote

monty Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I like the anology. Both of the events are the most intimate known to us as human beings. How wonderful our "Bridegroom" is loving, accepting, and does not fault us if our technique is faulty. He accepts our best efforts and draws us ever closer to Him. If we are old and are not what we once were He accepts that to and still draws us closer to him. He is fully committed to us and knowing that encourages us to put our full trust in Him. Each time our relationship grows deeper and deeper just like a committed marriage sexual relationship. Quote

I will remember that, Gerry, when I get to 70! :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
M. T. Cross Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 When you get to 70, you need the first before the second. I imagine at 70 you pray that you can still have sex...... Quote
Stan Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Actually, there are many who have an active sex life after 70, but generally have to be physically fit. I remember a couple of things,,, a friend from 35 years ago who's income dependent on 'servicing woman' talk about how response some over 80 are, and how he was surprised he was. This was a bout 5 years ago he told me. ALSO know about a male just over 80 going through a divorce as he was picking up younger woman, about 65-70 in malls, viagra enhanced. Gibs Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Here's a word from EGW. I find today this is so true by so many. Results of Excesses.--"Men and women, you will one day learn what is lust and the result of its gratification. Passion of just as base a quality may be found in the marriage relation as outside of it. {AH 124.2} What is the result of giving loose rein to the lower passions? . . . The bedchamber, where angels of God should preside, is made unholy by unholy practices. And because shameful animalism rules, bodies are corrupted; loathsome practices lead to loathsome diseases. That which God has given as a blessing is made a curse. {AH 124.3} Sexual excess will effectually destroy a love for devotional exercises, will take from the brain the substance needed to nourish the system, and will most effectively exhaust the vitality. No woman should aid her husband in this work of self-destruction. She will not do it if she is enlightened and has true love for him. {AH 124.4} The more the animal passions are indulged, the stronger do they become, and the more violent will be their clamors for indulgence. Let God-fearing men and women awake to their duty. Many professed Christians are suffering with paralysis of nerve and brain because of their intemperance in this direction." {AH 124.5} 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
