bonnie Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 British Doctors Call for Ban on Long Kitchen Knives to End Stabbings December 27, 2012 By Daniel Greenfield Someone stop Julia Child before she stabs again The good news is that if we ever do get that assault rifle ban, followed by a handgun ban, followed by a ban of anything that can shoot bullets, the “Banners” will still have a banner year of banning all the other ways with which people kill other people. Violent crimes haven’t gone away with the UK’s gun control. They’ve actually gone up. Britons suffer 1,158,957 violent crimes per year, which works out at 2,034 per 100,000 residents. The U.S., meanwhile, has a rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, which is lower than France’s, at 504 Instead of gun crime, the UK worries about knife crime. And has been practicing knife control. The UK outlawed the switchblade and gravity knife in 1959. In 1988 possession of a pocket knife with a blade larger than 3 inches in public became illegal. In 1996, it became illegal to sell a razor blade to anyone under the age of 16. In 2007, you needed a license to be able to sell “non-domestic knives.” Despite all that knifepoint robberies rose by 10 percent this year and there are some 60,000 stabbings each year. So the push is on to outlaw long kitchen knives. Once that’s done, surely utopia will be at hand. A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase – and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings. They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon. They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen. None of the chefs felt such knives were essential, since the point of a short blade was just as useful when a sharp end was needed. The researchers say legislation to ban the sale of long pointed knives would be a key step in the fight against violent crime. “We suggest that banning the sale of long pointed knives is a sensible and practical measure that would have this effect.” Certainly no law-abiding person needs a long blade kitchen knife. No one is talking about outlawing all kitchen knives. Just the ones with long blades. No reason for anyone to go beyond a paring knife anyway. The chefs say so and what does Julia Child know anyway. Take a good look America. This is where we’re headed under liberal dominion. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. bonnie Posted December 28, 2012 Author Posted December 28, 2012 Like I have always said, the slippery sloap that libs just can't seem to understand. It has a certain logic tho.If we can get rid of the illegal assault weapons or those that will use them in a illegal manner with a law to prevent people from dying, why not these knives? I have some and I admit to rarely using them.If the US follows suit I can't say I would even miss them except for those rare times they come in handy. So if these knives kill people let's get rid of them. How many inanimate objects kill people in large numbers? How many do we have to pass a law against before we can control people with these laws? I assume in all countries it is against the law to kill a person with a 10 inch knife blade, doesn't seem to be working. Maybe next we should start removing the hands that use these inanimate objects to kill Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Ted Oplinger Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 First, they said the lack of firearms would promote the general welfare. It hasn't, particularly with the criminalization of self-defense there. Now, those same advocates want to ban the long knife. This, too, will pass for good wisdom, and the net result will be the worsening of the state of the common man there... To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. bonnie Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 That statement is the equivalent of covering your ears. How about uncovering yours. This topic is about British Doctors Call for Ban Long Kitchen Knives. For or against.Doesn't it make sense if banning guns hasn't stopped the homicide by long knife that it to should be banned? I have two in my knife holder. I also have a 9 inch and a couple of 8 inch. Now if I am willing to kill someone, will I be stopped because I only have the 9 and 8 inch left? Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Moderators lazarus Posted January 8, 2013 Moderators Posted January 8, 2013 Never said we should ban guns but clearly something is wrong when American are killing each other with guns at 11,000 a year and other countries such as the UK are only killing 35. You are delusional if you think that is acceptable. Seems like many Americans accept that the murder if 6 & 7 year olds is the price of their version of freedom. Unfortunately those children no longer have the freedom to pursue happiness. Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. If you do not ban guns entirely except for authorities and military, how do you propose to stop illegal possession? If you were to remove the gang related homicides our murder rate would fall dramatically. Gang members really don't care if a gun is illegal,I would imagine they prefer it that way so as not to trace it back. Every gang member represents not a failure of gun control but of parent control and involvement. I would think weapons are easier to obtain illegally in the US because most are manufactured here or I think they are. Stop the manufacture? You are looking at guns and not the people or the reason for pulling the trigger. While I maybe delusional,I think the way you present your argument is dishonest. Your implication that "many Americans accept that the murder if 6 & 7 year olds is the price of their version of freedom" is a total misrepresentation. The price of freedom is not free and is very high, but should not be at the expense of children. You still shy away from answering why where there is easy access there is a very low crime/homicide rate. Why are gang members(basically children) killing so many of their peers? In places where gun ownership is required you would expect mayhem and death. Not what you see. You do see that in places like Chicago with strict gun control laws and very high murder rates. Why? Moderators lazarus Posted January 8, 2013 Moderators Posted January 8, 2013 ]If you do not ban guns entirely except for authorities and military, how do you propose to stop illegal possession? People can own guns in the UK. The controls are very strict and that's what reduces illegal possession. Criminals find it very hard to get guns. It's easy for criminals to get guns in the US. Quote: If you were to remove the gang related homicides our murder rate would fall dramatically. Gang members really don't care if a gun is illegal,I would imagine they prefer it that way so as not to trace it back. Every gang member represents not a failure of gun control but of parent control and involvement. Quote: I would think weapons are easier to obtain illegally in the US because most are manufactured Its easy for legal guns to get into illegal hands. Gun makers want to make money. They'll take advantage of lax American laws. Quote: Your implication that "many Americans accept that the murder if 6 & 7 year olds is the price of their version of freedom" is a total misrepresentation. The fact that the gun lobby is promoting more guns is evidence of that. More guns = more deaths. Few guns = fewer deaths. 11,000 v 35. Quote: The price of freedom is not free and is very high, but should not be at the expense of children. It is and it will stay that way if the gun lobby have their way. Quote: You do see that in places like Chicago with strict gun control laws and very high murder rates. Why? Because they are American cities. American culture finds this level of violence acceptable and the guns are being supplied from the areas of easy access. Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Members phkrause Posted January 9, 2013 Members Posted January 9, 2013 But then cars kill far more than either. Ban all cars!!! Lets look at what cars were made for! Driving from one place to another, I believe! Guns were made to murder, if I'm not mistaken! Personally I don't have any problem with people having guns. So I'm not in agreement with your argument about banning Cars. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Ted Oplinger Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Considering that the 11,000 fatality statistic conflates murder/homicides with self-defense shootings (justifiable homicide) and suicides, and further conflates the issue by combining criminal rifle shootings with handgun shootings...and we compare that to UK's magical 35 statistic which is...handguns only? In a nation where citizens don't have the right to defend themselves, and immigrant violence is quite under-reported for fear of creating the perspective the Muslims are a prime source of violence? Add to this the fact that most of the criminal shootings in that 11,000 fatality statistic are from areas of the US where the handgun laws are already as restrictive as UK's policies (Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago lead the way)...and I say there is much room for improvement in comparing the two nations on this subject. As I said above...first was the promise of better crime stats if only guns are outlawed...except the promise never materialized, did it? Now, it is the call for the long knives, with the same promise. The sad fact is, the sinful people intent on ending another's life will use what is handy to do so, and no nation can legislate that fact away. In the UK, they take away guns, so criminals now carry long knives... Take away the long knives, and the criminals will resort to...clubs similar to those carried by the police there...and continuing to say it's not right to resist such predatory, evil behavior that destroys society's fabric. Diminishing the value of human life, all in the name of security and compassion. And many of those 6 and 7 year olds, as well as many the adult teachers who also lost their lives, may be alive today had the law-abiding school staff been allowed to conceal-carry on site, and shoot the perp before too many got shot. I don't blame the criminals, nor their weapons, for these tragedies. I put the blame squarely on the politicians who demean the right to life by declaring the life of the common person of such low value it is not worthy of defense by others who esteem life to be of great value, against those who don't, wishing to end it. I put the blame on those who denigrate the dignity of a person to the point they are but cattle, easy prey for the criminal and abusive government agent alike. Outlawing the tools criminals use is never the answer. It works as well as outlawing alcohol and prostitution have in curbing sinful man's appetite for such indulgences in those matters. Equipping, training, and enabling the law-abiding to make sure defense against the criminal and tyrannical has worked every time its tried. Blessings Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. Ted Oplinger Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 UK had a "good year" statistically, and it gets exalted as the paragon of virtue, eh? But that statistic is indeed cherry picked and compared against a conflated US statistic, isn't it? Laz, you seem pretty down on the US. Sorry to hear that. Despite its flaws, it is still a better place to live than most places in this world. Let me clue you into a fact: criminals of all nations (including UK) get guns easily via the illegal markets. Just ask the IRA members in Northern Ireland (part of the UK). Hint: criminals don't obey laws! Maybe that's why they are....criminals, maybe? Gun laws have no impact on the criminal, because they affect only...the law abiding. What does work in keeping illegal arms off the streets? Policing the trade areas for illegal shipments, and faster response by police to recover stolen guns. Making gun laws restrictive may greatly reduce the availability of firearms stolen from citizens...but such are but a tiny fraction of the overall illegal gun availability. Most of the illegal trade comes from police and government agents taking the bribes, looking the other way...in short, good ol' government corruption. Don't blame the gun lobbies or the manufacturers - criminal activity and opportunity begets and drives the illegal weapons market, not the gun lobbies. Laws don't restrict this. Goodness...it does appear gun control advocates can't discuss the topics without conflating several issues into one emotional argument, can they? Want a good comparison? Let's check also with the Netherlands and France, who also make it extremely difficult to get guns legally. Oops! those nations have more violent crime than the US...despite the gun laws. What about Australia? Same thing happened, right after they accepted the gun-control premise. Then there's the paragon of Central American gun virtues, Mexico, where not only do they keep most guns out of the citizen's reach, they take it a step further and declare it illegal to own any firearm that is chambered for a round used by their military. The Mexican President even has the gall to come to our government and tell us that our lawful gun usage is the reason for their violence. Peaceful country, right? Don't blame America's Second Amendment for their mess, as the Federal aid of arms shipped to Mexican Federales (as part of the two countries' war on drugs) instead gets funneled by those same Federales to...those wonderful law-abiding businesses that are the drug cartels. What they don't get from that channel is much more cheaply obtained from the Chinese and Russian manufacturers that the US...a point lost on most uninformed gun control advocates. The truth is, all gun control is rooted in the desire for people control, not crime reduction. People control is all about keeping the general population devalued and unable to dissent effectively - keeping the status quo, politically. Let the people petition, even riot - it won't change the status quo (see recent events in Greece and China for that; incidently, both those countries also have gun policies as restrictive, if not more so, than UK). The UN gun treaty? Aimed at preventing the rebellion coming with the establishment of the global government, at the expense of individual and national sovereignty. When gun control advocates want to discuss the real issues of crime reduction, illegal firearms trade, and the true motives for gun control moves...let me know. until then, I will continue to champion the right, responsibility and dignity of the common man to resist crime and make political dissent effective against tyrannical governments of all stripes...even the tyranny of a republic or democracy which tramples the rights and dissent of the minority...using the best tools available. In today's age, that includes the firearms of all stripes. Blessings Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent.
