Clio Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 Religion wants to fit us with glasses; the Lord wants to open our eyes. Religion, if it shows us the Word at all, shows it to us through a filter of tradition. Jesus wants us to be free to preach and believe the Word as it is. What happens with doctrinal traditions is that they become a substitute for the Bible. Instead of preachers being called and taught to minister as Jesus reveals and anoints, learning how to study out difficult passages for themselves with Holy Spirit guidance, they are trained to become defenders and promoters of their tradition. Even where they may believe some true things, all too often, the truth is dead and ineffective. Why? because great light has become great tradition... What happens when Jesus, in fulfilling His purpose for His elect, begins to reveal truth that crosses and corrects some of the error that has become embodied within the various traditions? Do the adherents jump for joy and say, "Oh, isn't it wonderful that the Lord is revealing truth that corrects the things we didn't understand?" No. What has really happened, unbeknownst to many sincere people is that spirits other than the Holy Spirit have used this process of turning belief and teaching into rigid tradition to ensnare people in religious prisons. They are too encumbered with tradition to seek God and look into the Bible for themselves and to be taught of the Spirit. If something is at variance with their tradition, it's wrong, in their estimation. I am persuaded that the very religious traditions to which people have clung for security have been their jailor. This is meant as an observation, across a number of denominations, applicable to many not just a few... I'd really like to hear others comments, observations, etc... and NO PERSONAL ATTACKS. Nicodema Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I think one of the problems is, doctrinal facts become traditions and then they become filters. It's not so much that new light from scripture is rejected as it is that new light cannot even be perceived, because everything read in scripture is then filtered through the lenses of those traditions and there is no room for the mind to grasp thoughts outside those traditions from the text. I know since the blinders started coming off, I have been astounded at the depth and multi-faceted nature of some of the most commonly known passages in Scripture.
