Paul Beach Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 Dear friends, Some people who Mrs. Gray knows are vertically challenged. They live their lives bumping into door knobs and kneecaps, yet they don't know that with a simple technique, they could be a couple inches higher so that their chins hit the doornobs rather than their noses. Read more about this AMAZING technique! http://www.local6.com/news/4574140/detail.html Sincerely, Mrs. Gray Quote
Michelle Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 I've read about this in HK as well. Being 5'10" in China means I'd rather trade inches with someone shorter! M Quote
Moderators LynnDel Posted June 8, 2005 Moderators Posted June 8, 2005 It would be easier to add cow's milk to the diet of all those children before they grow up and find themselves shorter than they want to be. I understand cow's milk is formulated so that it makes calves legs grow long and strong, and that children in non-dairy cultures who start drinking cow's milk grow significantly taller than their parents. There would be an added economic benefit: The Lactaid producers would have their sales increase exponentially. LD Quote LD

I don't like reading this. If it's true, then it explains why my children are significantly slower in growth than either my husband or I. We've a permanent growth chart at my grandmother's home that shows the growth of myself, my brother and sister, and now my children. Of all of us, my two children are the only ones who did not drink cow's milk while growing up. They are both running about 4 inches shorter than any of the rest of us year-by-year. Again, if this is true, I've stunted their growth by following the advice of my Adventist brethern: stay away from cow's milk. It is harmful to one's physique. Quote
Clio Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 Our children have always had all the milk they want to drink... they are significantly taller than preceding generations. Fresh from the cow milk is one area we have never stinted on. My son is ... 16, 6'2" and wears a size 16 man's shoe. If he holds true to my husband's growth pattern... and he should... he has all his life... he should be between 6'6" and 6'8" by the time he's 19. Unfortunately for local coaches he abhors basketball. Now fishing... that's a different story altogether. Can't find him? Check the local fishing hole. Michelle Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 I was raised on cow's milk and am 2" taller than my mom and 2" shorter than my dad. My brother is 1" taller than my dad (6'1"). My DH is taller than both his parents. My kids aren't being raised on cow's milk and they are very tall for their ages (especially my almost 8 year old who wears size 10 for the length, even though it usually hangs on him because he's so skinny--my 6 year old wears size 10 for the girth, as he was a very fat baby and is still stocky, but about 6 inches shorter than his brother). I have noticed that the teenagers here in HK are very tall, much taller than 10 years ago. Many are as tall as or taller than me. In the north 10 years ago, we could find the occasional boy who was as tall as I, but never girls, and Southern Chinese were considerably shorter. However, with whatever change in diet (milk?), they are growing much taller here in the south. At least some are--there are still plenty of people shorter than I, but it's always a source of wonder when I get on the MTR next to someone who's taller than I (and not a gwailo). M Quote
cricket Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 Michelle, do the youth in Hong Kong seem to reach puberty about the same time as youth in America, or is there a noticeable difference? My doctor friends tell me that our American diet (rich in protein) is responisble for younger and younger adolescent stages. They tell me that a vegetarian diet will prolong the youth and allow adolescence to occur later in the teenaged years. Quote

Moderators LynnDel Posted June 9, 2005 Moderators Posted June 9, 2005 There has been some discussion as to whether the hormones given cows to increase milk production are transmitted to humans and thereby cause earlier puberty. LD Quote LD

Michelle Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Good question, Christine--I'm not sure I've paid that much attention. Though probably somewhat later. The Form 1 and 2 students (equivalent to our grade 7 and 8) look/seem much younger than our kids. There are quite a few boys in form 1 who are the same height as my almost 8 year old. So it could be--I've read about growth hormones in the milk/beef/meat in general and think it's a distinct possibility. M Quote
Moderators LynnDel Posted June 13, 2005 Moderators Posted June 13, 2005 This reminds me of those stories you hear of some folks who've smoked for 60 years and are still in good health. In other words, some bodies are better able to resist cancer -- and to address our discussion, other bodies are better able to resist height. If your genes give you the potential for height, a particular type of diet might help that height be realized. If you have no potential for height, forget it. It's like trying to start a garden by pouring water on rocks instead of on seeds. LynnDel Quote LD
