Ressurection math.

I was recently listening to the Adventist sermon about the resurrection of the wicked, so I though I'd do a little math.

http://www.prb.org/Articles/2002/HowManyPeopleHaveEverLivedonEarth.aspx

So, we have estimated 107 billion people that ever lived, considering that unborn will be in the city... who knows how many of these are... I'm just trying to see what it would look like if all of the people who ever lived would all of a sudden stand on Earth surface.

Total area of the Earth is: 510,100,000 km², that includes oceans, and mountains ... etc.

So, It made me wonder... how much earth space would each resurrected person would get, granted that all of the earth was flat, with no oceans to worry about?

510,100,000 / 107,602,707,791 = 0.005 miles, or roughly 5 square meters. For non-Europeans, that's about 16 square feet. So, imagine a grid of people covering the entire earth surface separated by 16 feet. If we factor in the areas that people simply wouldn't be able to stand on, places mountains, canyons, or large bodies of water, that number will sharply decrease.

If the oceans are still present, then we have:

150,000,000 / 107,602,707,791 = 1.3 meters for each person to stand on, or roughly 4 feet.

Just something to think about the next time you hear this.

I figure God will have all in hand! What's there to worry about? Or do you think there wont be enough room for all?

4 square feet?

What if we lived in high rise apartments? Or underground? Or on floating cities, perhaps (both floating in the sky and on the waters)?

A 100 story high rise would yield each of us 400 square feet and if we lived in families of 4, we'd have 1600 square feet to share. And that's more than I have right now with my family. We could parse it down to 1000 square feet (which is still more than my family shares now) and "donate" 600 square feet to parks and recreation (of which only 6 square feet are usable, unless we also have floating parks). Which should then give us 562,500 square feet for parks and recreation.

Then again, we could use patios and rooftops, and rotating crop buildings (like ferris wheels).

Also, we might be able to visit other planets, so our homes might be on time share.

I'm not talking about the new earth. I'm talking if all of the people would be resurrected at one time to stand on earth outside of the city of God, how much ground they would get to stand on. You know, when the generals organize armies to take the city. With so many people standing in the same place, the organization is a futile task. Most of them won't even be able to see it to attack it. So, they are basically resurrected, scared to death in such chaos, and then see the burning stuff flying from the sky to burn them alive.

I love doing this kind of stuff, just for the mental challenge.

I query that 109 billion figure, though: I've heard it said that half of the people who have ever lived are alive now. Global population was 1 billion in 1900.

Hmmm...I think I'll just look a a somewhat smaller portion of the earth...New Jerusalem.

Just figuring on the New Jerusalem...which, according to Revelation 21:16, is 1500 miles square by 1500 miles high. Let's see...if I do the math correctly:

1 mile is 5280 feet. 1500 miles one side gives 1500 x 5280= 7,920,000 ft per side. 1500 miles wide by 1500 mile long gives 7,920,000 x 7,920,000 = 62,726,000,000,000 sq feet, just at the base.

Let's make it a very generous 15 feet per floor, then 5 feet of "foundation" for the next higher floor...20 feet total. Going up, The first mile gives 5280 feet/20 per floor = 264 floors - greater than anything on earth today.

"I go to prepare for you a dwelling place" - the promise assured each of the redeemed!

62,726,000,000,000 square feet at the base...divided by a very generous 3,000 square feet per person (bigger than most houses on earth) gives 20,909,000,000 people on the first floor alone.

For the first mile up, 20,909,000,000 each floor x 264 floors = 5,519,900,000,000 people.

If I do the math correctly, there is enough square feet to give 5.5199 trillion people a dwelling place bigger than my 2 story house, just in the first mile alone.

That would be if all people were our size and build at resurrection. But, with 1499 more miles up, there is plenty of room to adjust for increased living space and height needs for each floor.

Just in the New Jerusalem. Even if it sat on this earth, this earth is a bit bigger than New Jerusalem's 1500 mile x 1500 miles.

I do this every so often to remind me there is more than enough space for the entire human race to accept redemption and have ample dwelling space there.

For people worried about the resource logistics...I think God has that firmly in hand.

Blessings!

I'd just like to point out that the math involved in making the estimation of sq.ft./person used here does not account for the Biblical account of the time in question. First one needs to subtract the number of righteous from the number of wicked and subtract the area of the New Jerusalem from the total square footage of the world if one is going to be anywhere close to accurate.

2,250,000 miles is not a city... that's a floating continent comparable to Australia.

1500 miles high ... is 272 times taller than the tallest mountain on earth.

Diameter of earth is 12,756 km tall, the city is 2414 km tall. That's almost 40% of earth's radius, or the size of the moon.

Yes, 1500 miles long/wide is immense. Comparable in size to the distance between Los Angeles, CA and the Texas/Louisiana border, and from Brownsville, TX to the Canadian border. The height of this city reaches our current upper atmosphere limit (~60 miles, according to NASA), then continues for 1460 miles further out into space. Putting that in context, the International Space Station orbits the earth at ~205-255 miles altitude, not even near the top of New Jerusalem or its walls.

It is absolutely mind-boggling.

It has more room in it for dwelling places than all the human race that can ever exist would need, and still have ample room for rivers, trees, courts, etc.

In perspective...a single "tower" within New Jerusalem that is the size of the state of Colorado (385 miles east-west by 275 miles north-south) and 2.5 miles high (an altitude of 13,200 ft - still within our comfortable atmosphere limits) can provide a 6000 sq.ft. dwelling place for each of 129.87 BILLION people. That would leave most of the city devoted to parks, courts, rivers, gardens, and such.

And our current population is...how many billion? And we say that is roughly *half* of all humans that have ever lived...

When Christ came to our abode, there was "no room at the inns" for Him. When we go to His abode, though, He won't be saying the same for the human race!

Yet, those standing too far away to see had made their choice not to accept goodness over evil. Even the individuals of ancient tribes that never actually heard of Christianity had a basic conscience. Everyone knows what is not fair, and what is abusive to others. Some chose to lie, steal, and attack others for their own selfish gain. They were in rebellion against their neighbors then, and would take that selfish, power-mongering nature to heaven if allowed to go there. I trust God to know who is safe to have in heaven and the New Earth. God won't force sinners to choose goodness over evil, and the horrors of the past seven thousand year's experiment with Satan's way needs to come to a permanent end.
