Tsunami Warning Issued After Calif. Quake

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. - A major earthquake struck Tuesday night about 80 miles off the coast of northern California, prompting a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the

U.S. Geological Survey Web site.

A tsunami warning was in effect from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

KCBS radio reported that residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, which was struck by a tsunami after an earthquake four decades ago.

Stuart Weinstein, a geologist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said that if a tsunami were generated, it would not be as strong as the Dec. 26 killer wave in the Indian Ocean.

"We're not expecting anything huge from an event this size," added Charles McCreery, the center's director.

Scientists were waiting for signs of any powerful ocean waves to reach tide gauges placed up and down the West Coast, Weinstein said.

"We're monitoring our sea gauges pretty carefully," he said.

In the spring of 1963, a magnitude-8.4 quake in Alaska generated tsunamis that caused damage there and in British Columbia, and in the states of Washington, California and Hawaii. More than 120 died.

Hardest hit was Crescent City, where 11 people were killed after waves reaching as much as 20 feet destroyed half of the waterfront business district. Source

The city leaders of Oregon coastal communities have come back with numbers as to how well the evacuation proceedures went. On a scale of 1-10, most said 4-6. Now they get to look at what went right, wrong and immplement change. With the quake being that close, it was apparent that many would not have made it to high ground should there have been an actual tsunami. If you are not familiar with the pacific coastline from northern ca. to vanc.bc; most are small artsy communities with almost mazelike streets and usually only one way in and out. Basically traps. I for one would not want to be at Cannon Beach, Ore during an evacuation. Really you just need to leave your car behind and beat cheeks. It would be faster.

I notice the USGS Earthquake site lists one major earthquake per day, June 12 through June 17 (6 quakes), all but one in or off the coast of the US, the exception being the 7.8 quake on June 13 in Chile. According to the REAL TIME FORECAST MAP , there is close to (probably slightly less than, if my colors are accurate) a 1/10 chance of a MMI VI quake in the next 24 hours in the S. Calif. (probably Yucaipa) area.

Oops! Now that I look at it, I could probably move to a state that borders California. When California falls into the ocean, I will be on beach front property!

Yes, Fran I can relate to tornados and thunderstorms. I have certainly seen/been in my share. However, life is just too short to exclude yourself from enjoying as much as possible of the beauty in the world which our Father created for us. There is no place "safe"

While I am saddened for those who lost lives and property, this time next week I'll be spending time Pismo Beach and selfishly hope the areas to the north are as close to back to normal as can be expected. That Mother Nature will be resting peacefully.

They were lucky there was not a Tsunami. An earthquake that close to the coast they would have had the wave hit them in 15 minutes or less. Hardly enough time to get into the car and into the traffic jam leaving.

Now compared to Tornadoes in the same period

Since 1973, there have been on average 22 tornado deaths in the month of April. Since 1973, there have been a total of 658 tornado deaths in the midwest than from earthquakes in the USA.

So you see there has been three times the deaths from tornados than from earthquakes in California.

Also you get 30 to 60 killed a year from tonados a year. A big earthquake ever ten or 20 years kills that many in California.

So what of we have an earthquake in california. They are responsible for the mountains we have and the water tables underground. Earthquakes give back 10 times the economic value to California in mountains and water than they take in damage every decade or so.

In 1890 Ontario california was running out of water. They were talking about abandoning it. Then the 6.5 liddle creek struck. Suddenly the underground wells opened up and domes of water 15 feet across and four feet high gushed out of the wells. Ontario has plenty of underground water even today 115 years later.

Of what economic worth is water because of quakes to California?
