JoeMo Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Quote: Is God male as we understand the term? My take - God is a "man in the sense that he entails all that is human (not just male). Lest anyone criticize me for limiting God, He is much MUCH more than a man - infinitely so. God shows His female side when he says things like: "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!" (Is 49:15) and “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing." (Matt. 23:27) Quote

Gibs Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Jesus the man born of Mary was an incorporation of man and Deity. EGW says it is a mysterious " "Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high, who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!" Christ humbled himself. In him the infinite and the finite met in a close and mysterious union. Deity was veiled with humanity. The Creator stooped to the created. God was manifest in the flesh. {YI, May 27, 1897 par. 6} 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Moderators Kevin H Posted January 30, 2013 Moderators Posted January 30, 2013 The Bible says that male and female are the image of God. While Jesus was born a man the idea of the second memember of the Godhead began as conseved in the Old Testament as the woman wisdom. The New Testament uses language for the Holy Spirit as a male individual. Linguist teach us that while in western translations of the scripture that God is always (unless there is a passage that they can't get around) translated as either male or nuter language, that in the Hebrew itself God is referred to 50% of the time in male language and 50% of the time in female language. Linguists have also pointed out that if you really want to be technical the term Jesus used translated "Father" is technically an inclusive word more like the term "Parent" I understand all of this as that God transends gender and to make God one or the other is the start of idolotry of making God into an image. Gibs Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Man is a created being, God is not, He is the creator. The man Jesus was one of us, He became God with us at Bethlehem as the Father came in that body, a union that remains a mystery. A union of man with our fallen sinful nature and the Highest, Yahweh the Father of all. " (Genesis 3:15, Ephesians 3:9-11; Colossians 1:26, 27; see EGW on Jeremiah 23:28.) The Mystery Hid for Eternal Ages.--The incarnation of Christ is a mystery. The union of divinity with humanity is a mystery indeed, hidden with God, "even the mystery which hath been hid from ages." It was kept in eternal silence by Jehovah, and was first revealed in Eden, by the prophecy that the Seed of the woman should bruise the serpent's head, and that he should bruise His heel. {6BC 1082.4} To present to the world this mystery that God kept in silence for eternal ages before the world was created, before man was created, was the part that Christ was to act in the work He entered upon when He came to this earth. And this wonderful mystery, the incarnation of Christ and the atonement that He made, must be declared to every son and daughter of Adam. . . . His sufferings perfectly fulfilled the claims of the law of God (ST Jan. 30, 1912). {6BC 1082.5} (1 Timothy 3:16.) Mystery of All Mysteries.--The incarnation of Christ is the mystery of all mysteries (Letter 276, 1904). {6BC 1082.6} 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. joeb Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 This is an interesting question. Would Christ have been born a male in a matriarchal world? I don't know, but I doubt it. But, it's nothing but rank supposition to say one way or the other. We do know, however, that God came in the way that makes it as easy as possible for us to understand Him whom is so far outside any human paradigm as to be extremely hard, if not impossible, to fully understand. And as such, Gibs, given your position on the Trinity that only the Father is Deity...does not your statement of Christ above lead logically to conclude either in Arius' portrayal of Christ, or the Gnostic portrayal of Christ? Blessings, Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. I believe the name "Father" is the role He has declared we must reference Him by while the issue of sin remains, just as the word "bride" is the reference point we have with respect to Christ...even though in Hebrews 2 He is not ashamed to call us "brothers"...
