St. Louis Residents and Former Residents

Attention dgrimm, OzarkWoman, LynnDel, puddles, and other St. Louis "lurkers who never post".

Over the years at Club Adventist, when people learn that I'm from St. Louis, some have told me they used to live in St. Louis County or near St. Louis. I've lived within this 4 square mile radius for the past 38 years and haven't met any of those people. Even so, this was on the news last night and it is important information for anyone who's ever lived in North St. Louis County (especially from 1960-1990). If you or a loved one ever lived in this cancer cluster, you may wish to contact the people in the article for further information. Additionally, there is a Facebook page mentioned in the article where you can contact others who are collecting data to help build a case for the CDC.

I, personally, can think of at least a half-dozen people whose medical issues (cancer, early Alzheimers, thyroid problems, nerve disorders) were probably a direct result of this radiation seepage.

Quote:
St. Louis Cancer Cluster

ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - There are radioactive secrets beneath the banks and waters of a north St. Louis County creek that may be linked to a staggering number of cancers, illnesses and birth defects. In four square miles, there are three reported cases of conjoined twins and cancer rates that one data expert says is statistically impossible.

Oh no!

Because you are a resident of that area, are you being offered any sort of medical resources or funding towards what might be related illnesses?

We haven't heard of anything like that yet. I think it'll take a lot of years and negotiations to get any sort of assistance.

I thought maybe you had! Cold Water Creek runs in and out all through Hazelwood, Florissant, Black Jack and some Bridgeton and Ferguson areas as well. Any young person who lived in these areas in the 40's-80's has surely had some contact with that creek. We were an outdoorsy bunch of children!

I can relate, although I've never been anywhere near St. Louis. I'm a Hanford "downwinder" born in the early 50's in northern Idaho and at that time living in northwestern Montana. I have quite a few medical problems, most of which are related to an autoimmune disease. My wife is also a downwinder from the same releases and has a couple of autoimmune diseases. I also know quite a few people my age who were downwinders also who have, or have had, cancer of one form or another.

Here's a wikipedia link to show what and who downwinders are.

Hi Joe! Sorry that you can relate--really! This has had a great impact on my family. We're close-knit in this community with 15 family members having either lived here all their lives, or for a great portion of their lives (20+ years). Two have died from cancer, one had early-onset Alzheimer's, two have neurological disorders (and one of those died early from complications), another has already suffered her third bout with cancer (and thyroid problems), three suffer from asthma attacks and are allergic to airborne pollutants, another contracted shingles in her early 30's, and I, myself, have had a number of surgical procedures that may be related to these toxins.

Still, most of us are living and doing as good as can be expected.

I'm just amazed at how clustered this is--if only our grandparents had chosen to live 5 miles further (in any direction)!
