This is despite the expiry of a three-months extension granted to them to vacate the land they had been living on for over 30 years. The land in question belongs to the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The church issued eviction notices to the squatters over three months ago but then granted them time to find another place to live. Sekove Vatuabete, one of the settlers issued with an eviction notice, said the grace period given to them to vacate the land expired two weeks ago. "Right now we are living on borrowed time," Mr Vatuabete. "They (church officials) can come anytime now and dismantle our houses and we will be powerless to do anything," he said. "All 25 families who were issued with eviction notices are members of the SDA Church. "It is quite funny that they are insisting on removing us from here when most of us have lived here for over 30 years." He said they had been in touch with the original landowners from Suvavou and Tamavua. The original landowners told the families to stay put. The SDA Church has told the people it wants to develop the land so Fulton College can be relocated there from Tailevu. Housing and Resettlement Minister Joji Banuve said the ministry had located land at the Waila Stage 3B subdivision for the resettlement of squatters. "The only thing prolonging their resettlement is the clearing of the area at Waila," Mr Banuve said. "After it is completed these families will be given priority to move there. "Today, I was at Vunivaivai Settlement, in Nepani, Nasinu, and even though I have not visited the squatters at Tamavua-i-Wai, I hope to do that soon to inform them of their resettlement." Administrators Gail Posted June 20, 2005 Administrators Posted June 20, 2005 I wonder what it feels like to squat. I bet the things I worry about in life are different from what they worry about Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
