Dr. Shane Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 No not the minor league hockey team. The real ones are in Florida. 'Killer Bees' May Spread Throughout Fla. Here in South Texas we have found the killer bees interbreed with our honey bees and become less aggressive. Of course our honey bees than become more aggressive <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Neil D Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Quote: Here in South Texas we have found the killer bees interbreed with our honey bees and become less aggressive. Of course our honey bees than become more aggressive Hmmmmmmmmm........ I think that there is some mis-information given out here.... And if one searches the internet a bit, they will find that the different types of bees are not necessarily melding thier temperments. The Africanized bee is a very aggressive and sensitive bee that reacts to any thing that appears to threaten it's hive. Of course, it is more resistant to mites than the colonized Italians, Russian, et al, but there are evidences that wild bees are also more resistant to their domisticated cousins. Of course, when ferral bees are domesticated, they immediately become subject to the mites, suggesting a man made problem in the colonies. As to the rumor that the Africanized honey bee is in Florida, that may be true...However, the melding of domesticated and Africanized bee has, at lest in the past, moving from S. America thru the northern part of S. America, thru Central America and on thru Mexico, has NOT abated the hot temper nor aggressiveness of the Africanized bee. There are some domesicated bees that have become hot tempered and not too many beekeepers keep these bees. And those that do, usually requeen that hive after destroying the queen, and within 3 weeks the hive has become much more calm. Moderators antcreations Posted June 22, 2005 Moderators Posted June 22, 2005 after watching Bowling for Columbine, all i can say is, this is another media manipulation to scare the public and make certain companies make more $$$$$. Neil D Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Well, I don't know what companys are making money from the africanized bee, but I do agree that this is a scare tactic. It is one of concern, but, as I have said in the past, it is manageable. Just gotta keep the bees away from the public... Dr. Shane Posted June 22, 2005 Author Posted June 22, 2005 Well I am glad to hear that. However we do have killer bees here (thus the name of our hockey team) and every few years we hear a story of someone dying from an attack. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
