Hi All

So, right at the moment I'm insanely busy at Stanford at the first residency for my Carnegie Foundation Scholarship. It's basically flat out from early morning until late at night.

At the same time, Town Hall has been particularly acrimonious, and I've been trying to moderate a little more actively to deal with that. Not the greatest timing, but that's life.

So, a couple of things: it was me, not Chrys, who moved/deleted the 'Rape...' thread - I didn't realise until someone pointed it out to me that it looked as though the message came from her. In future I'll remember to sign the move message...

In the Tom/jasd exchange I've tried to use a fairly light touch, and have edited both of them, but there was a significant time lapse in there due to busyness, so that it looked less even-handed than it was meant to be.

Really, I would love to be able to take it much easier and focus on other things, so I hope you'll be willing to play nice. The key is actually reasonably simple, and it's like those 'Men's Rules for Women': If we say something that can be taken two ways, and one way makes you upset, we meant it the other way. In other words, read everything with the assumption that, if it's at all ambiguous, the writer meant it the nicer way...

And finally, we need to recognise that we all have different levels and styles of language use. Some of us are very attunded to the precise meanings of words, others are more approximate - again, charitable interpretation is important. And finally, I will also be editing for chiding of people's posting style: choices of how to post are made for good reasons, and should be respected. So if jasd uses long words and poetic allusions, or Ed W uses complicated metaphors, or whatever, "there is read, or not read, there is no kvetch'.

How come I don't have problems following anyone else save one person then? Is it because all the others are deficient in language skills? I dont think so Mr. Bravus.

I'm not saying his stuff is easy to read, I'm saying he chooses to make it hard to read, and that's his choice. The choice facing you is whether or not to read it.
