BobRyan Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 http://clubadventist.com/forum/ubbthread...html#Post609335 Quote: In the February Diversity lecture, Dr Lawrence Geraty, teacher, writer, award-winning archaeologist, and college president, (most recently at La Sierra University) began by looking at diversity in the world and in the church. He encouraged the sixty-five members of his audience in Newbold's Smith Centre to imagine themselves in the shoes of marginal people: immigrants and members of minority ethnic groups in foreign countries, women and gay people in a straight, male-led church, questioning students in an authoritarian church. "We are haunted by imperfection," he said, "and we need to think about our attitudes to imperfect people and, as Seventh-day Adventists, people who pride themselves on being 'people of The Book' – to know what The Book says." Dr Geraty then proceeded with a tour of scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments emphasising God's love for people of all ethnic groups, not just for Israel, His chosen. He pointed out the diversity of the disciples, the multi-ethnic leadership of the church in Antioch and the diversity of the great multitude of those in Revelation 7. WoW! LGBT are now "ethnic groups" in Larry Geraty's world. In painting with such a broad brush - he classifies real ethnic groups as "imperfect people" as if they were born with some sort of moral or social handicap or imperfection simply because they are not part of Geraty's group. How odd. But that is the price one must be willing to pay if the idea is to cram-wedge-shoehorn-wrench the LGBT topic into ethnic diversity as Geraty was apparently doing. Oh what varied winds they sail who first toss away their anchor. in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.

How odd. I suspect he was appealing to the biases and prejudices he could imagine were held in the group he was speaking to. this is not a hard leap. and likely he was asking them to reexamine their attitudes towards any individual, kind of individual, or group of people they were not comfortable with, and challenging them to be as the Bible describes, "no respecter of persons". Moderators Bravus Posted February 17, 2013 Moderators Posted February 17, 2013 Quote: "immigrants and members of minority ethnic groups in foreign countries, women and gay people in a straight, male-led church, questioning students in an authoritarian church." Three groups listed, with the conjunctions ('OR' or 'AND') omitted. Unless you wish to assert that Dr Geraty is making 'questioning students' into an ethnic group, it is much more likely that the missing conjunctions are 'OR' than 'AND'. In that context, 'women and gay people' is not being made into another ethnic group, it is being considered as a marginalised group (or, better, two marginalised groups) *along with* some ethnic groups, and 'questioning students'. Geraty then looked through the issue of diversity in the Bible - and in most of those examples, it was ethnic diversity that was highlighted. But "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28. Scripture, also, uses ethnicity as one among several categories of difference. Quote Truth is important

Maybe a minority group, but not ethnic. BTW I noticed that 1 Corinthians 6 does not mention anything about lesbians. So its just the gay males that are sinners? Oh thats right - even back then men were paying good money to see two women together, so it would never do to make mention of something that might hurt the mens fun! Just like concubines seemed to be just fine... Quote
