Sad to learn that Dr.C.Everett Koop has died. He was a friend of my Aunt Judith and Cousin Linda and a good friend of Seventh-day Adventists.

Farewell Koop. I liked him.

My cousin just sent me this:

You may have read that an icon of public health died at age 96 on Monday, C. Everett Koop, MD, former surgeon General. He was probably the most widely known/respected person I had ever met. What a giant in US public health.

This is the favorite picture I took of "Chick". He was speaking at his 90th birthday celebration in Washington DC. He was looking over his glasses while reading his address to see who it was taking all the photos of him. He saw me and smiled and kept speaking after giving me "that look". I had walked all the way up the center aisle while he was speaking in a large hall with my short telephoto lens, and I am sure some thought I was from the press....

That is Surg Gen Satcher behind him on left. I made an album of photos I took that day and delivered it to him later that year. Of course, I had laryngitis at his party and could not hardly talk to anyone, at least I was not coughing. What a curse my allergies are!

I could not resist the photo of Hillary sitting next to him and talking to him during someone else's speech.

Sorry I won't get another visit with him, we met on 6 - 7 occasions after 1997 because of our mutual interest in tobacco treatment. Took a picture taken of us at a christmas tree the last time we had dinner together, cannot find that right now. I was hoping to see him in March when I was planning to go to Boston, but that trip was cancelled. He had a great life and made such an impact on the world. Will have to wait until he is vibrant again and enjoying eternity with me for our next visit. Wishing I could go to his funeral, but have not heard anything yet...

My mom was completely charmed by him! She met him only twice. But he always asked about her when we met.

Peace,

Linda
