Members phkrause Posted March 14, 2013 Members Posted March 14, 2013 This year a number of state bills are being introduced that involve religious liberty. Here are a few highlights with more to come in following weeks. http://religiousliberty.tv/legislative-round-up-2013.html Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted March 30, 2013 Moderators Posted March 30, 2013 Religious Liberty, that meaning of that term is interesting. People differ in their understanding. Under the civil law of the United States, the provisions of the First Amendment are normative. The expectation is that Individuals have a right to believe and to practice with some limitations, that government can not establish a religion and that individuals cannot in the name of religion abridge the rights of others. In general terms I support those aspects of the understanding of the First Amendment. As I review the list of items alleged to be of religious liberty concern I have mixed reactions. I can say that some are of concern. But, I can also say that some in my thinking are not appropriate. Just because something is alleged to be of religious liberty concern does not mean that it is. That has been historically true. In the past history of the United States racial discrimination was practiced on the basis of alleged Biblical teaching. In the past history of our Church some believed that we could claim that because we were a church we could pay certain women less than men for the same work. All of that was bogus and the courts so ruled. Quote Gregory
Ted Oplinger Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 If I remember my Constitution correctly, the religion clause of the First Amendment not only prohibits Congress from establishing religion, it also expressly forbids the prohibiting of the free exercise of religion. Our government can neither mandate a specific religion, nor tell people they can't carry their faith outside the private arena. Legislatively, government is to be strictly neutral with regard to the exercise of spiritual beliefs. Blessings, Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J.
