I think the government should regulate paranoia about the next silly thing to worry about the government regulating...

Some people really ought to read the news some times.

Government regulation of gardens is already happening. There is a guy down south someplace, I can't remember where right now because this story is about a year old, who had a big garden he used to help feed the people in his neighborhood. The city came in and shut him down. They didn't want him providing produce for free for his neighbors.

Also the only seeds that you can buy now, have been genetically altered, so that the plants do not bear more seed. If you want more seeds, you have to go buy them.

If you really want to see this in action, try farming in the US with your own heritage seed, of any cash crop or grain. It is quite impossible now without signing a business contract with the major seed supplier. Any farmer that tries runs into major walls.

On the other note...nothing says self-sufficiency like being able to feed your family - and others - just from your own garden.

So...if one can hunt their own game (for the meat consumers), and grow their own their own vegetables, one cannot be so easily controlled. And control of the masses is the name of the game right now.

Always has been!

Absolutely nothing to the extent we are seeing now

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

That is not true at all. One can buy heirloom seeds. They cost more, but they are out there. In fact, we have a place near us that has a huge supply of heirloom seeds for many, many different plants.

There is a rather odd disconnect from reality happening in this thread. The OP and topic title basically is complaining about government interference with seeds. OK, fair enough. Nobody likes to be told what they can or cannot do, especially by the government. But the conversation immediately turns to complaining about genetically altered seeds being produced that prevent a second generation of that altered plant forcing one to go back to buy more seed from the company that created it. What is to blame for that? Is it government over-regulation? Or under-regulation? This happens because big agro-business has stymied regulation of their business of creating genetically altered seeds so they can also create a monopoly on being the supplier of seeds that produce better crops.

But then we complain about the risks of genetic engineering and the fact we have a hard time getting heirloom seeds. But that is big business allowed to stifle governmental I the reference with their business. What solutions are possible? Self-regulation? Yeah right!! Government putting limits on what can or cannot be done in genetic engineering of our food? But we don't want more government interfering with our lives.

Yet we happy let big business control our lives instead, because we wouldn't want government to control big business...

Government is not the savior to rescue us from Big Business. Our lives are control by BOTH Big Business AND Big Government.

The mass production of seeds for farming is monopolized by Monsanto Corp...which bought pols in both the House and Senate to include within a spending bill, a line item "anonymously attached" which protects Monsanto (and its smaller brothers) from court injunctions against genetically altered seed sales.

Government does not protect us from Big Business; Government uses issues about Big Business to get Bigger, and Big Business plays Big Government as its own enforcer. The regulations Government edicts for business only allows Big Business to remain sheltered and protected, while Small Business drowns in red tape.

Both Big Business and Big Government are in bed together. Only a foolish child runs around to the other side of the bed to complain to one what the other is doing....

Thanks for this, Ted. You have both, put this in perspective, and summed it up very nicely.
