British authorities to deport 500 Muslim

International, matamat

2005-08-07

London, Aug 7 - In a massive crackdown on Muslim following the London terror attacks, British authorities will deport in phases as many as 500 Muslims, out of which a dozen clerics will be sent to their homelands over the next two weeks.

The move follows Prime Minister Tony Blair's announcement last week of a purge on terrorists and extremists.

Immigration officials have already been given a list of names, compiled by MI5, and told to begin proceedings. Among the first to be deported will be a dozen radical clerics. But hundreds of other foreign extremists, including some Islamic bookshop owners, writers, teachers and website operators will also go, the 'News of the World' newspaper reported.

"Just as the police operation over the past four weeks has been dynamic and fast-paced, so will our response," a senior home official was quoted as saying.

All 500 names have been taken from a "watch list" of extremists compiled over the past five years by the Intelligence Service. Their identities are being kept secret so that they will not be able to go into hiding or mount a legal challenge.

The deportation process will begin after Home Secretary Charles Clarke returns from holiday this week.

An initial wave of up to 100 people will be booted out in the next month, officials at both the Home Office and the Foreign Office revealed.

Another 100 foreign nationals will then be sent home by the end of the year. And 300 more will be sent home next year once the government has new laws in place to strip them of their British citizenship. Over the next week agreements will be completed with ten African and Middle Eastern countries to make sure they will accept the extremists

Enough to give one pause, isn't it? Yet it is hard to criticise them too much. It does make one think that one day it will be Sabbath-keepers that are rounded up. However we won't be just exported <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I think the British are being fair and reasonable. If some Islamic extremists, especially influential clerics, decry our nations as being terribly evil and hate Western Civilization so much they would countenance blowing up strangers on subways and buses, then surely they would be happiest if they were shipped back home to their idyllic Islamic paradises.

One needs to take this report with a pinch of salt.

The News of the World is a tabloid with journalistic integrity somwehere between the New York Times and the National Enquirer!

Whilst some extremists, the most vocal ones have had threats of deportation, like the bombers on the public transport system in July, manyu of the problems lie with a silent rather than vocal minority. The community is aware that the slightest whiff of islamophobia can kick off some serious civil unrest.

Not only that, but you can't deport an extremist who is born in Britain can you?

Native borns can be kicked out too. In that case it is called exile. At least, this is so in the USA.

I haven't been able to follow the news regarding the bombing too closely, but were the train bombers british citizens converted to radical Islamic teachings?

I don't know.

Most of them were British born, while others were naturalised as asylum seekers

So, David, whatcha think- Should those radical muslims be allowed to stay in the UK if they are promoting radicle Islamic extremism?

Shane you are so right... whilst we are shouting "Kick them out and bring in laws to protect us" I think that we are also sanctioning our own problems for the future.

What I find in all of this is that no one has officially claimed responsibility yet we have attributed these crimes to Islamic militants and once the bombs had been confirmed as bombs they were automatically attributed to Al Queda.

I have come to the conclusion that AL Queda is the current scape goat for any terrorist event any where in the world. I feel that it is far to easy to blame this faceless group.

I also think that although what we experienced in London was terrible, we need to put it into context of what millions of Iraqi's experience daily.

Just a few thoughts

Are there other British people who have come to the same conclusion as you, Fifi? IOWs, is the Al Queda threat just a kinda fad that is here today, and gone in ...4 years ...once a few more things are found out? Have you heard if the authorities are suspecting other people, rather than Al Queda?
