I found this in the Readers Digest and they gave attribution for the blurb to dailymail.co.uk.

The following help wanted ad for a hospital was rejected as discriminatory. See if you can find the offending part of the ad.

Quote:
Domestic cleaner required for local hospital. Must be fluent in English for health and safety reasons. Previous experience preferred. Must be reliable and hardworking.

Nope. It wasn't, dgrimm. Good guess though. That was my first guess too.

Is it the word "domestic"?

Does that suggest a person who is married, or at least someone who has their own home and a spouse or family to look after. . .

A single person, who lives alone or with their parents, is never referred to as a "domestic" cleaner.

So far, nobody has hit it. This is so weird that it is going to take a few more guesses.

The part that would be offensive would be the perceived inference that anyone not speaking English would likely be less than healthy and therefor unsafe.

would it be reliable and hardworking???

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner folks. The ad was deemed discriminatory because it discriminated against "unreliable people".....

This is where we're headed folks. We becoming more and more like Europe. More and more politically correct, and more and more socialistic. So, be prepared for this type of thing here too as we are not that far behind the UK.

Pretty soon, in the way they're going, it will be deemed discriminatory to not hire drug addicts, alcoholics, criminals, etc....

Local doesn't say anything about where any prospective employee has to live. All it has to do with is where the hospital itself is located in relation to where the original ad was run. However, that has nothing to do with why the ad was deemed discriminatory. It was deemed disciminatory solely upon the word unreliable.

well that is really off the wall for sure

That it is. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it. If an employer cannot eliminate unreliable people in their hiring process how in the world can they expect to run an efficient, reliable organization? Do we really want hospitals to be staffed by unreliable people? It's insane to think that we would.

I wonder if they would seriously consider you for the job though, if you admitted to being unreliable and a slacker?

Excuse me....

Where do you get the idea that we are becoming "more and more socialistic"? What is "socialistic" in your opinion? How do you arrive to that conclusion? What criteria are you using....

....and yes, I am biting....

You know Neil, the funny thing about that is, I have family that live in Europe, and they say the same thing! But the other way around, that Europe is becoming like the USA. Funny how people see things.

For those not familiar with UK newspapers, the dailymail is about as reliable as the weekly world news. I'd never say that stories like this don't ever happen, but I don't see how the actions of a single person, reported by a notoriously unreliable newspaper, can be said with confidence to accurately represent "where we are going."

I've noticed this in the healthcare debate as there's a significant push in the UK to privatize the NHS. UK doctors largely support socialized medicine and oppose privatization, while US doctors in a mostly privatized system largely support continued privatization and oppose socialization.

Almost as if people who have found comfort and stability oppose change in general, and it often has absolutely nothing to do with merit.

without scrolling down first, I will venture to say the offending points are the "reliable and hardworking".

The union mentality is to get paid, regardless of reliability and regardless how much work one really puts into the effort.

Now, I scroll down to see if I hit the winning answer.....

"The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J.
