Lauralea Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 This study shows high doses of vitamin B6 B12 and folic acid (also known as folate) lower Alzheimer's risk in those with high levels of homocysteine, a blood chemical. The amounts- translated to 800 mcg of folic acid or folate, 500 mcg of B12, and 20 mg of B6- are readily obtainable. There are some indications in other studies that some may benefit from higher doses of B12. Special note to SDAs: Other studies have shown that low B12 levels can be related to high homocysteine, which should be of particular interest to Adventists, since vegans and vegetarians are at elevated risk of low B12. B12 should not be taken together with iron per the late Victor Herbert, who was perhaps the world's foremost authority on B12. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=proceedings+national+academy+david+smith+alzheimers+vitamin Quote Behold what manner of love the Father hath given unto us.
Lauralea Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 You're welcome. For those who are experiencing some memory decline, another supplement called citicoline can also be helpful. It is a special type of choline that the brain can use and has been shown to improve mental function. Quote Behold what manner of love the Father hath given unto us.
LifeHiscost Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 WebMD: Better information. Better health. Quote: Citicoline is a brain chemical that occurs naturally in the body. As a medicine, it is taken by mouth as a supplement or given by IV or as a shot. Citicoline is used for Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, head trauma, cerebrovascular disease such as stroke, age-related memory loss, Parkinson's disease, attention deficit-hyperactive disorder (ADHD), and glaucoma. Citicoline was originally developed in Japan for stroke. It was later introduced as a prescription drug in many European countries. In these countries it is now frequently prescribed for thinking problems related to circulation problems in the brain. In the US, citicoline is marketed as a dietary supplement. How does it work? Citicoline seems to increase a brain chemical called phosphatidylcholine. This brain chemical is important for brain function. Citicoline might also decrease brain tissue damage when the brain is injured. God cares! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
