Bush warns looters, urges Americans conserve gas

Bush said they all agreed the storm's damage to the gas supply was a "temporary disruption" and urged Americans to use prudence in filling up over the next few weeks.

"Don't buy gas if you don't need it," he said in Oval Office remarks with his father and Clinton at his side.

Bush temporarily waived the Jones Act, which will allow foreign tankers to deliver oil to U.S. ports to ease disruptions in oil supplies. He said the government was working with energy companies to repair and reactivate major refineries and pipelines.

Bush acknowledged these steps would not solve the problem of getting enough gasoline to market.

Bush also said he expected Saudi Arabia to do "everything they can" to provide more oil, although he noted the Saudis had "limited capacity" to do so.

They are predicting that North Texas will suffer serious gas shortages by tomorrow.

What did he mean by "Don't buy gas if you don't need it"? Everyone needs gas. Did he mean don't try to hoard it, build up private stockpiles? Very few people have the means to store more gas than what they can put in their vehicles' gas tanks, and maybe in a gas can for the lawnmower.

I think he would have been better saying, "Don't do any unnecessary driving. Try to use less gas than you did before. Don't mow your lawn quite as often." Of course, most of us were already doing these things just because gas prices were so high before the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

I think he meant to stay home this Labor Day weekend if you don't need to go any where.
