joeb Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I tried out a new Firefox plugin, Ghostery, today. It's designed to identify and block all the stuff that websites use to track you from one site to however many sites you visit. Since internet tracking is a privacy concern this is, or should be, a concern to most of us. Ghostery notifies you on the right side of the address bar how many it blocked, and puts a small pop up on the top right of your browser page for a short time that tells you exactly what it blocked. It is fully configurable so that if you should desire for some reason or another to allow something/someone to track you all across the internet you can block the rest and allow that one, or however many you want to allow. CA has uses as many as 7 trackers to follow you whenever you leave here. Sites such as Newegg and some other commercial sites like major league sports sites have up to 9. dslreports uses no more than 4. slashdot uses even fewer. So, CA tracks you around the internet about as much as any site on the internet, and considerably more than a lot of sites. I just thought that this might be of interest to people concerned about their privacy online. You can find Ghostery here. If you follow the tutorial you can whitelist(unblock) some of the trackers, or all of them, from any individual site. It's not hard to do, and then all the trackers from that site will work again. IOW's you will be able to support CA from following the ads, without having to let all the other sites in the world track you. Cookies are only a small part of the widgets used to track users anymore. Tracking has become really sophisticated and that's why plugins like this are available now. Some trackers are nothing more than a few pixels on a web page. It's impossible to find them using anything other than software designed to find them, and this is one of the things Ghostery blocks.
